Nucale fold. 1.1mm?

Hello all, I have been unsucessfully searching for information on the measurements taken from the Nucale fold. I had my 12 week scan yesterday. Nucale measurement 1.1mm, my dd 18mths ago was 0.8mm. On that respect this one seems high to me but does anyone know what the range is and weather 1.1mm should worry me. I'm 29 by the way if that makes any difference.

Thanks

Did they give you your stats calculated on your age or just the measurement??

fuzzyfelt · 07/11/2006 09:21

I had a nuchal fold scan a couple of years ago. I believe that it is only if the measurement is over 3 mm that there is a 'higher' risk of there being a problem.

1.1 mm sounds perfectly normal to me. What risk factor did they give you - must be low with your ade and nuchal measurement?

Coolmama · 07/11/2006 09:24

first off, you should not be trying to understand your nuchal fold measurment - the assessment should be done by your dr. Second, the measurement is calculated with regards to gestational age, maternal age, position of the baby etc and is never considered in isolation - for more info -
here - if you want to wade through all the medical stuff.

Hi moomimin, did some trawling through websites and the general consensus is anything less than 3mm is fine so you're lo is well within the expected range.

Now stop worrying ()!

Coolmama · 07/11/2006 09:31

Sorry - just read my post and I sound very bossy!
What I was trying to say was that it is not just the measurement that counts, but all sorts of other factors and they are all taken into account when doing these assessments so you are better off waiting for the dr to explain it all before worrying. Hope the link helped - Dr Nikolaides is the guy who actually developed the nuchal fold scan, so it's pretty good info.

one of my twins had a high nuchal fold - something around 3 I think (his id twin had a normal one - which was odd). Anyway - he is actually fine. Although it did give us cause for concern at the time.

What were your stats from that (based upon the measurement , your current age etc), that is more meaningful than the straight measurement. Could also vary depending on when within the 11-13 week "window" the measurement was taken.

Moomin, don't worry . When I had my Nuchal Fold bloods last time I read the report they sent and looked up info on the internet. I got myself in a right state as one of the chemicals in the blood was higher than average. Eventually got DH to speak to Institute of Fetal medicine and they said it was because the baby was most probably a boy (which it was). So there are all sorts of factors the Docs are aware of which they don't tell us.

moomimin · 07/11/2006 12:09

Thanks for your quick replies. I understand now that they need the combination of results to come up with a risk. I am having the combine bloods done in a couple of weeks to then go with the measurements. I just wondered weather the measurement had any bearing on it's own, but obviously not. It just freaked me as I compared it to dd scan results from 18mths ago. Won't be doing that again, going to lock hers away so I can't compare.

It is made slightly more difficult for me as I am in France and the Language problems make it harder for me to get the exact understanding of what is happening. Glad you are all here though.

Thanks again. Oh and coolmama, yes you were a bit bossy, but hey say it how it is, I'm all for that. lol It's ok, really.

heavens, glad i didn't read this last week! Ours was 1.4mm (I'm 32) but we had the integrated test and results have just come back as 1 in 50,000 - so clearly the measurement isn't the only thing to worry about!
