10 week scan worry

Hi all,

I went for my dating scan on Tuesday and they told me I was only 10+4 (I guessed we weren't as far along as predicted as we conceived immediately after stopping the pill).

Anyway we got to see baby and a heartbeat and very wriggly legs! It was lovely to finally see a pic of him/her.

The ultrasound lady did was that they didn't usually see babies so young and there was cause a possible for concern of the NT of 3mm and a possible 'cystic hygroma' but will go back at 12 weeks to re-scan. If there was any concern at 12 weeks I would be referred to a specialist unit.

I saw the midwife afterwards and she said that they shouldn't have measured as it was too early (no bloods taken and no official measurement taken just a comment). She said the baby could grown and the NT shrink...or not. The consultant also popped in at the request of the midwife as they could see we were concerned. She said 'I wouldn't loose any sleep over it'....

Has anyone ever had an early scan and had similar comments? I know the NT isnt the be all and end all of a babies health but there seems to be a lot of emphasis on this at the moment in scanning...

Obviously we will just have to wait it out for another 2 weeks and see what happens then but I can't help but worry...

Haven't been through this but didn't want to read and run, glad your little baby had a heartbeat and was wriggling around and sorry that you have a horrible wait ahead of you and that I can't offer any experience but good luck and I hope things turn out well for you and baby xxx

hello, what a cute pic!

i would try to take the consultant's words about not losing any sleep to heart if you can; they don't say things lightly. fingers crossed for you.

hi did they say where the cystic hygroma was (head or neck) as the neck can be treatable. we were unlucky in 2012 and found out at 12wk scan the cystic hygroma was on the head and had to have a emergency termination at 16wk Sad so I am praying for you that they got ut wrong or it was on the neck. she really shouldn't have scared you like that as proper measurements shouldn't be taken until 12wk! a nerve wracking 2wk wait for you but will be thinking of you x

Mrsthoree, so sorry for your loss :-(

Well from the photo is looks like neck but really she didn't give anymore information than that....

They have said that it is POBBIBLE so I'm hoping that we go back in 2 weeks to a normal scan... :-/

Dottie I hope this information is useful to you www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/8058241/

That is a bit of a worry dottie, have you thought about having the Harmony test or something similar?

Do you know what the crown-rump length of your baby was? I believe the accuracy of the combined test is dependent on this, with the minimum being 48mm.

2 weeks seems like an awfully long time, if you weren't far off the 48mm measurement, might they be able to bring your next scan forward at all?

dottiemad · 01/05/2015 11:06

Well they wanted me to wait 3 weeks but my midwife said it wasn't fair to wait that long and moved it forward a week.

The measurement was 36mm and that's how they determined gestational age.

I did think of the Harmony and getting it done between now and my next scan but that still isn't 100% is it? I think I will wait until the scan, see what the outcome is and then decide the next move...such a worrying time.

Harmony is very accurate (more than 99% in the case of Downs) and more importantly carries no risk of miscarriage.

Just wanted to update everyone on here as to our latest news and to inform any others who may have gone through a similar experience.

We went for our 12 week scan today (rescheduled as baby was younger than initially thought, hence our 10 week worry!).

We had a different monographer and I didn't mention anything about the findings of the last sonographer (she seemed unaware that we had been 2 weeks earlier). She performed NT measurements and I asked if there was nothing to be concerned about....no :-)

I then told her the story from 2 weeks prior and she said there was absolutely nothing of concern that she had seen and that the highest NT she had gotten from today was 1.9mm :-)

So baby bean is doing just fine :-)

Thank you all for your support during this tough 2 weeks, hopefully we can now enjoy the rest of the pregnancy!

xxx
