Hi all-ive just bought a second hand John Lewis cot from another mum all v clean and she threw in the mattress which all looks clean and fine.is it ok to have a second hand mattress-been told it linked to cot death but others say its fine aslong as clean etc.

I would get a new mattress tbh. It's not just about how clean it is, it's about the indents already left by another child. It's not good for your baby.

We had exactly the same conundrum - second hand mattress looked in perfect condition but in the end we got a new one (on sale babies r us) and I'm much happier with that decision

I would get a new one purely for ease of mind.

Get a new mattress. We've always got the cheapest foam ones (around £30) and then replaced for new babies. Or earlier after especially impressive vomits / poos.

New mattress 100% .... There are lots of health and safety reasons to acquire a new mattress for a new baby. That's not to say anything would definitely happen if you didn't, but I'd err on the side of caution x

The lullaby trust advises a new one, but also states that if you can't do that that what you use should be clean, firm, no tears and fit the cot with no gaps around the edges.
My gut tells me to get a new one every time though, which we are doing.

Given how cheap a new mattress is, it's worth it for the peace of mind

New one.
