I'm going to a restaurant tonight that serves oak roasted salmon - can I eat this? Is it just smoked salmon I can't eat? Help!

You can eat all and any kind of salmon. What makes you think you can't?

Hellolemonade · 28/04/2015 18:04

Yes. And you can eat smoked salmon!

bunny85 · 28/04/2015 18:05

Hmm why do you think you can't eat smoked salmon? Nhs website says you can, and I've been enjoying it quite a bit.
Not sure about roasted, but I really think it's ok.

MrsExcited · 28/04/2015 18:05

If it's been cooked rather than smoked and it's eaten hot then it's definitely fine - you wouldn't necessarily want to eat farmed salmon every day of the week because of pollutant build up but as a one off it's absolutely problem free.

If it's smoked but not cooked then the US warns against it on grounds of listeria, but the NHS doesn't because the risk is so very small - it's a risk appetite thing.

If it's cooked but then eaten cold then again the US says ideally no on the grounds of a tiny listeria risk but the NHS says yes. Basically cold cooked salmon is the same type of risk as eating a cold chicken salad sandwich, if you'd eat that then you'd be OK with this.

Wow thanks Rita!

Pretty much everything has a tiny listeria risk. Salad, meats, fruit, ice cream, butter, cheese.....all these have been connected to listeria outbreaks. What you need to avoid is anywhere with poor hygiene, NOT any particular food.
It is a risk assesment, but based on faulty reasoning and poor advice.

I think the other reason why US website says it's not recommended and UK says it is, is because of the different ways that salmon is smoked. The way it's done here in UK makes it safe to be eaten!

Rita, I wonder if organic smoked salmon is better than farmed, or is it essentially the same thing?
