Depends on the pregnancy. Most airlines require a 'fit to fly' note from about 28 weeks - if all is uncomplicated your GP should be able to issue one if needed.

Most airlines have slightly different rules & it can depend on whether it's short or longhaul. It's usually up to about 32 weeks and most require a letter to confirm you're fit & well after about 28.

Check the airline's websites and remember to think about how far along you'll be on the return journey so you don't get stranded somewhere!

All major airlines follow what WHO says:

Pregnant women can normally travel safely by air, but most airlines restrict travel in late pregnancy. Typical guidelines for a woman with an uncomplicated pregnancy are:

  • after the 28th week of pregnancy, a letter from a doctor or midwife should be carried, confirming the expected date of delivery and that the pregnancy is normal;
  • for single pregnancies, flying is permitted up to the end of the 36th week;
  • for multiple pregnancies, flying is permitted up to the end of the 32nd week.

Each case of complicated pregnancy requires medical clearance.

KLM fly till 36 wks

Delta have no rules on it, just need a letter to say you are fit to fly.

I am flying long haul at 35 wks (to return to the UK to deliver).

My friend who works for an airline says if you go for a holiday make sure your fit to fly letter has the date of your return on too so that you have a fit to fly for the return flight. Apparently despite the airline rules some check ins in Europe get funny if you don't. So take a copy of the airline rules with you too, and your hospital note (which you should have anyway in case anything happens out there) to prove your dates. Check out the medical facilities where you are going and that your insurance covers not just you but your unborn child if you go into labour.

Depends on the airline and your insurance but should be fine. If anything changes in your pregnancy you'll need to check with your insurer, for example last pregnancy I was diagnosed with placenta praevia at my 20 week scan which changed my pregnancy from low risk to high risk.
I'm unsure how far along you'll be but towards the end of the third trimester I'd check your baby is also insured - many just insure you
Have a good holiday

Here you go, best thread on this I stumbled across a few weeks ago.

Good thread Lemon.
I'll second what was said in that thread, it's not the flying as such but more the giving birth abroad. A lot depends though such as where you're going and when.
My friend unexpectedly gave birth in Italy. As both countries are EU you'd think it'd be straightforward getting the baby a passport but it took ages. Luckily she had family there so didn't have to pay for hotels etc and could bond / bf and do the postpartum bit in relative peace. And baby was ok health wise too luckily.

Depends on the airline, and whether you're flying domestically or internationally.

Airlines really don't want you giving birth aboard one of their planes. They also really don't want something bad happening to a pregnant woman on one of their planes. They get a lot of publicity for this sort of thing, and it's not the sort they want. That's what their policies are designed to prevent.

If you're from a country with some sort of national health insurance (cough CIVILIZED country cough), you really do not want to give birth while on holiday here in the US.
