Hi all,

So I had some itching this morning, went to get it checked, and yes, I've got thrush Sad I'm 10 weeks preg. The doctor gave me pessaries and a cream, but I really can't bring myself to stuff anything in there knowing that my baby is in there...Also I read it might not be the best thing to do in the first trimester. So I'm just wondering, is there any chance it will just go by itself if I do nothing or maybe just some live yogurt application (read somewhere it can help)? Is there a hope it can go away or nearly impossible?

It does sometimes go by itself but your pg hormones might make it less likely to.
Yes live yoghurt will help. As might as salty tepid bath. Also sudocreme for the itching.

Maybe if you use the pessaries insert with a clean finger rather than the applicator thing then there's less chance of causing any irritation to the cervix.

Pessaries should be absolutely fine in the first trimester when inserted with a finger instead of the applicator. Doctor wouldn't prescribe them if not safe. Would recommend using them, rather than you getting reoccurances of thrush. If you are worried though ask to speak to your midwife, am sure she will put your mind at ease :)

Get some acidophulus probiotics as well from holland and barrett Smile

Thank you so much everyone, really helpful advises.. Will try something natural first, and if no improvement - I guess would have to take the pessaries. You are right applecore, she wouldn't have prescribed if not safe. It's just in my mind. I'm also going now to buy a good stock up of boring cotton knickers Grin read that can also help - mine are all synthetic.

If at home try and wear long skirts or just mooch around in a dressing gown with no underwear, that helps. Definitely yes to cotton underwear otherwise though :)

I know what you mean about it being in your mind, I had to take antibiotics last week for a UTI and wasn't happy about it, but needs must. Could you ask the doctor for external cream instead? That's what I have been prescribed

bunny85 · 28/04/2015 15:38

Oh applecore, sorry to hear you had to take antibiotics, well for UTI it really has to be done, as you say. Hope they helped and you feel better!

As for the topical cream, yes she gave me that one too. So I've got both pessaries and the cream. Do you think if I just use the cream it can help on its own?

I'm actually walking hope from Sainsbury's as I type, loaded with live yogurt and cotton knickers Grin Going to try all this first and see... As for now, it's definitely not going away and only getting worse as there's some horrible white discharge there too Sad

I've treated thrush with the pessary twice this pregnancy, both times under advice from gp that it was safe. I used the applicator -she didn't tell me not to but feel bad after advice on this thread! I was a bit tentative though! And both times I gave it a while to go on its own before resorting to seeing gp.

applecore0317 · 28/04/2015 16:04

Don't feel bad Mrs Dumbledore, if I had a bad case I wouldn't think twice about using the pessaries. As I currently only have a mild case of it I would rather stick to the cream.

OP the cream will help if external, but if the thrush is bad and internal you'll probably have to give in and use the pessaries.

bunny85 · 28/04/2015 16:07

don't worry MrsDumbledore, I think it may also depend on other factors, say how far along you are when you get thrush. In any case I think the advise to not use the applicator is just a precaution, I'm sure it's not even long to reach the uterus, and even if it was, it's well sealed in there! sorry you had to deal with it twice, how far along are you?

Plus I have had to use progesterone pessaries from 21 weeks up to 36 weeks three times a day, so really wouldn't worry about two lots of thrush pessaries mrsdumbledore

MrsDumbledore · 28/04/2015 16:43

35 weeks now. One treatment was a few weeks ago, the other can't remember but probably around the 20 week mark. Gp said it is common to be reoccurring due to pregnancy hormones and also I have gestational diabetes which again makes thrush more likely. Pregnancy is so glamorous isn't it!

bunny85 · 28/04/2015 17:29

Tell me about it. Gas, burping, thrush, cotton knickers with awful floral print - how lovely! Grin
Well you are nearly there, not long to go now, exciting!! Good luck with the rest, it will all be so worth it! Thanks
