Should I be banishing the thong song??

So when I'm at home, it's onesie-tastic! Alongside regular knickers. 29wks with twins and absolutely nothing could be comfier. But when I'm out and about if I'm wearing a pair of leggings I always pop on some thongs, just to avoid a VPL. Also for some reason, I can't seem to find any leggings that are thick enough so they don't show the colour of your underwear through? So again I thong up for that reason as well.

Today one of my friends who's also expecting commented that you shouldn't wear thongs when pregnant, no explanation as to why but just said she was told that during her first pregnancy.

I can't seem to find any reference to this on the Internet so now it's got me wondering - are thongs on a banned list somewhere?

I think it's something to do with bacteria being more likely to cause an infection in a thong... I'm probably wrong though! If you're comfortable in them (are you insane?! Smile) then I shouldn't think they are a problem.

pinkie1982 · 26/04/2015 19:56

I still wear mine now and again depending on what I am wearing I find them much more comfy than big pants! Things harbour bacteria apparently so that may be why. They say to wear cotton ones

applecore0317 · 26/04/2015 20:02

I've worn mine throughout.. Didn't know it would cause an issue. I even have thong panty liners, hate wearing normal pants and only change into them in the evening. Have only had the one urine infection and am now 35+4

Never heard of thongs being an issue but you could buy some seamless maternity knickers from H&M (under a tenner for a pack of three) if you're that worried. I've stockpiled them as they're nice and stretchy with ruched sides and sit very comfortably under your bump. You can't detect a hint of them under leggings, either!

I thonged during pregnancy and still am 14 months later Grin if your feeling a bit Confused that someone can see your ass, wear a short black skirt over the top stops my ass hanging out haha!!

youlemming · 26/04/2015 20:15

I find any pants I wear end up riding up so wear thongs, at least they are designed thin enough not to be uncomfortable stuck up your backside Grin
If it's not causing you any specific issues in terms of infections just do what's more comfortable for you.
I wore them all the way through my first and will do with this pregnancy as well.

farmerswifey · 26/04/2015 21:38

I love Boden for leggings - They are super quality and as long as you are buying the right size, no one will see your underwear through them.

Toothfairy7 · 26/04/2015 22:31

I find leggings very comfortable too, although I do prefer wearing normal knickers and don't like thongs so I don't have this dilemma , but I don't worry too much about the vpl or colour visibility because I always always wear a longer top over the leggings? So like a long tshirt or a vest or tunic top? Maybe this is an idea if you wanted to avoid the thongs?

Fattycow · 26/04/2015 22:41

I never worry about showing underwear lines or colours through my leggings, as I don't wear them as pants! Leggings are tights without feet, so worn under something, not on their own! Shock

allotherusernamesaretaken · 27/04/2015 04:44

Seems odd. I have never heard this, but I wore huge pants under my leggings and didn't give a second thought to vpl!

Choccyhobnob · 27/04/2015 10:29

I find my thongs so much comfier than bigger pants at the moment! I've got about 10 which are my nice comfy ones, never heard you shouldn't wear them!

applecore0317 · 27/04/2015 10:50

fattycow good quality leggings can be worn on their own. Personally they are the only thing I am really comfy in at this stage, personal preference I think. If I wanted footless tights I would buy them and not leggings :(

applecore0317 · 27/04/2015 10:51

Sorry meant to be a :)

brokencrayons · 29/04/2015 03:57

I've not owned a thing since the early 00's! I had no idea people still wore them!Shock

Number3cometome · 29/04/2015 11:30

I think if I wore a thong it would get lost in the mass rolls that appear to be taking over my body!

I'm sticking with my Bridget Jones's for now Wink

babymouse · 29/04/2015 11:42

A thong creates a highway for bacteria from the bum to your vagina basically. This can potentially cause problems in anyone.

If your leggings are that see through perhaps npl boy shirts are a better idea of you are worried about possible infections.

babymouse · 29/04/2015 11:45

*shorts not shirts obviously

misssmilla1 · 29/04/2015 14:13

M&S do no vpl shorts made out of tencel or something similar. They do work, but the material they're made out of made me sweat and didn't breathe which made me itch like mad - not really a look I was going for!

Toothfairy7 · 29/04/2015 18:12

Haha! I know exactly the type you are talking about misssmilla1 !!! Itching always a good look!!
I think te best way to go is wear comfortable and breathable underwear and wear something long to cover the leggings, as I don't like my bum on show with any potential vpl or skin show so I always wear a long top or short dress xx

Bex174 · 30/04/2015 11:15

Ah ok, so no true 'contraindication' as such, but just watch for infections...

I've tried to wear longer tops to cover my bum, but I'm not very big up top (size 8-10, 34A) so have to wear clothes true to size else they're really baggy or fall off my shoulders, but because I'm carrying twins my bump is huge in comparison to me! So it consumes all the material of even the longer length maternity tops and they have a tendency to ride up a bit and show my lower bum, that's why I'm still sporting the thong for now!

Might try some big pants of an evening though, but I did buy a pair from Asda George and found they dug in a little at the inner bit of my thighs, in front of the gusset part if that makes sense? So maybe I'll try a different style and see how I get on :)
