pregnanacy after loop biopsy

When I was 22 (5 years ago) I had a Loop Biopsy done to remove pre-cancerous cells. I'm sure, but not 100%, that she mentioned I'd need a stitch if ever I became pregnant because of how much they took away (I'm sure she must have said this otherwise how else would I know about it?).

I'm yet to see a doctor yet about current pregnancy and want to know how to go about getting it checked and a weak cervix diagnosed? Has anyone had a loop and gone on to have problem free pregnancies?

I'm 35 weeks plus 4 days now and thankfully avoided the stitch. I was referred to a consultant after my booking in appointment as mentioned the loop treatment to the midwife. So, was under consultant care up until 34 weeks, had progesterone pessaries as my cervix was short and was signed off twice to rest.

As long as you ask your midwife to refer you, you will then get booked in with a consultant who will do an internal scan to check the length of your cervix and whether it is soft and then arrange regular internal scans or stitch if definitely needed.

I had that treatment done in 2012, and now pregnant with my first. But when I asked the midwife about a stitch, she just said 'no, we don't do that' in a really patronising way! Made me feel stupid for asking. That said, the area they removed was small so maybe it's different if you had more removed?

Hey. I had a loop biopsy too, the area took over a year to heal and no one knew why but due to this I was under consultant during my pregnancy and had a planned section.

Good luck x

I had a lletz biopsy when I was 17, now 32. I was told by the midwife that two excisions would mean consultant led care. I had one excision and two cauterisations but they said that fine

It must be different from hospital to hospital as I only had one loop treatment which was 16 months ago, only a small amount of cells removed and I was under consultant care.

My cousin had a large amount removed, was under consultant care but didn't need a stitch. She had had CIN3

I had one and got inadvertently pg a few months later

I did have pg problems ( gestational diabetes) but they were totally unrelated to the surgery.

I had loop 7 years ago. i mentioned it in my booking appt, mdwife referred me to prem clinic at hospital so i had monthly cervix scans through late 1st and whole of 2nd trimesters. Was discharged from clinic at 26w as cervix hadn't moved so no stitch for me yay. Consultant said 40% of people who have had loop have cervix lengthen but you don't definitely have it happen so you might not need a stitch. Jst make sure your midwife team knows.

I've had 2 letz treatments and when I've spoken to consultant - after 3 mc's sadly - I was told that when ( if Confused ) I get that far that yes I will need consultant care, a scan to see how short my cervix is and then potentially a stitch or progesterone.

I just need to get past 12 weeks first!!!! Attempt number 4 coming up - I will be on progesterone from BFP so have been told would probably continue it throughout pregnancy

Hi all, thank you for replies.

I had CN2 & they took quite a lot away so I'll be sure to mention it at booking in appointment & really push to get it checked if needs be (had to do this with CN2 as was under the age & they kept dismissing me).

Following with interest. Slightly different but I had cold coagulation treatment last August for cervical erosion. Midwife said she had never heard of it- so referred to consultant. First appointment tomorrow and no idea what to expect.... Really hoping I can be discharge back to midwife led as want to give birth at MLU. Anyone have any experience of this?

toohardtothinkofaname · 29/04/2015 16:38

Just an update; at a pre-booking appointment yesterday the midwife said to notify my proper midwife at my booking appointment who will refer me to a consultant. They will then do internal check to see if stitches are needed. She stressed it was important though as CN2 & CN3 mean quite a lot is removed (I had CN2)

I had CIN2 and didn't need a stitch, so fingers crossed all will be well with you. Glad you are being referred
