I had my booking appointment on Friday I was then 10+6 weeks. This is my 3rd baby but I'm sure I heard both dd's heartbeats at this gestation. The midwife said it's fine but I'm just a bit worried thats all as I don't have my scan for a few weeks yet. Has anyone else not heard their baby's heartbeat at the gestation?

yes they couldnt hear mine that early either. don't worry. they shouldn't really have a try that soon, always leads to worry!

Chandra · 05/11/2006 20:03

I didn't heard DS until he was 14 weeks, my midwife refused to try before then. Hopefully things are OK, please wait a couple of weeks and try again

griffintribe · 05/11/2006 20:03

I have never had this happen to me but i am sure that if the midwife was worried she would have you in for an emergency scan straight away. I am sure its all ok

lulumama · 05/11/2006 20:04

gosh,,,,have never even been offered the chance to hear it before 16 weeks......i think before then the uterus can be too low down in the pelvic cavity which makes it hard to pick up ( i might be wrong!)

but definitely not offered it in in either pregnancy unti 16 weeks.....

HTH!

Ahhh thanks

I just can't for the life of me rememeber when it was that I heard the girls heartbeats (dd2 now 4 years old) and was addiment it was around this time. Thankyou for the reasurrance, I wish the midwife hadn't tried now though.

I have a home doppler, this is my third pg and this time I first heard the heart beat at 9 weeks. I am 12 weeks tommorow and sometimes it can take 15/20 mins for me to find it. Can be a bit scary so not sure why I put myself through it. What I'm trying to explain though is that unless she spent ages searching for it, it is very likely that she wouldn't find it. They are still so tiny at this gestation and very good at hiding. It's not really until they get to about 14/16 weeks that it is more obvious as to the position and much easier to find.

Fingers crossed for you megandsoph.

lucyminky · 05/11/2006 20:31

HI there, you really shouldnt worry, as a student midwife i have been told not to even listen for fetal hearts until after 12 weeks as has been said previously the uterus is stll down in the pelvis so it is virtually impossible to pick it up anyway!!! At 16 wks the fetal heart is still hard to locate at times as they are just still so small and mobile!!! Hope you feel reassured! x

WaitingForGodKnows · 05/11/2006 20:42

I never listen for FH until after 12 weeks and even then I always warn the women beforehand that I might not be able to find it (partly because I am a crap student and partly because it's too early )

ProfYaffle · 05/11/2006 20:57

Like Lulumama no-one tried to hear my baby's heartbeat until 16 weeks.

I have chilled a wee bit now thanks to you peeps Got a shock the other day also as the midwife I saw told me in the appointment I would have a normal midwife led anti natal care to then recive a phone call later on Friday to say that my pregancy will be in fact consultant led care due to dd2 being so small when she was born although she was over due. So I think this just added abit of fear also. Feel a tad out of control and finding it abit difficult to belive that the baby is in there, apart from the sore boobs and constant loo trips of course is the only signs that i'm pregnant. Ahh I don't know.

Anyways thanks so much for all the reasurrance bless you's x x

I never heard my dd's or my ds2b hb until after 20 weeks scan. I did ask if they could check it but they advised me that it's not reliable. Too mnay women have been for check up's and had the mw try to listen to the hb for them to not find it..reasurre the women, who then goes home, tells dh/dp that no hb could be detected and said dh/dp is on the phone ranting at 8pm..!

Told me its not worth the stress to mum and as long as everything else is going well then there is no concern. TBH I never truly believed I was pregnant (each time) until around 20 weeks and I started to show..even then each week I still paniced something was wrong even when you could clearly see my expanding tummy. Us women eh!!

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 07/11/2006 15:13

meg - you do know that you don't have to have the shared care (wiht the consultant) don't you?? I've "agreed" to see the consultant ONCE - so I'm on his books if I need a consultant later in pg - but my MW has told me I can tell him I don't wish to see him again during the pg if I wantto

incy · 07/11/2006 15:22

Was told at my booking appointment (10 weeks)there would be no chance of hearing a heartbeat until at least 13 weeks (and this is only if you are very slim.) MW said would not normally try until 16 weeks with the majority of women. Hope this helps.

DelGirl · 07/11/2006 15:27

I'm sure I was told that they wouldn't check for a heartbeat until 14 weeks as you're unlikely to hear it. hth
