Planning to bf...what do I need?

Obviously I want to be prepared in case I can't breastfeed for whatever reason and I do plan on eventually expressing so that other people can help with feeding, so what do I realistically need in terms of numbers of bottles, sterilisers etc?

And is it worth just buying a couple of different makes of bottles in case baby doesn't get on with them?

I wouldn't bother buying lots of different types of bottles-I'd go for a starter pack, you can but ones with six ready to use bottles and cartons in. I know that there's always a 24 hours place open somewhere but at the point where I needed f I wouldn't have wanted to go out to get it and they're under a tenner so not a massive waste if they never get used.

Thank you everyone for the replies.

My nearest 24 hour supermarket is also about half an hour away so I may get a couple of preprepared bottles just in case but I probably won't buy any formula or any other bottles. I also won't worry about getting a steriliser or breast pump yet.

I think my local children's centre has a breastfeeding group that I definitely want to attend! Will look into that a bit more when I'm a little further along Smile

Lansinoh...and pillows (either a breastfeeding pillow, or regular ones) to prop baby on...lots and lots of pillows! Other than that the only thing I had was one carton of preprepared formula just in case. Haven't used anything else.

Oh. And having lots of vest tops with adjustable straps has helped. So I wear one under everything and can easily feed when out and about while having my stomach covered.

Lansinoh, breast pads (lots for early weeks), nursing bras (get four or six, as they get wet in early weeks imo), join local breastfeeding groups once baby is born.

I wouldn't bother with bottles or a breast pump initially. I never used nipper shields, I think they can make you sore?

Boobs, Lanisohl & Netflicks! Grin

Agree with blond, boobs, lansinoh, excellent telly choice, and I'd add nice water bottle that filters it for you (Oh the thirst...)

Lansinoh
iPad
Netflix
Pints of water to have at hand
Snacks
Breast pads

You don't want to express for quite some time until at least your supply & demean is established.

You will still need to sterilise the pump and bottles if you do decide to express and store the milk.

my baby is 6 days old. for him i bought an electric breast pump that came with 1 botttle and a tub for serlizing.. and i got 2 small cartons of sma just incase. he was born at home but was a but grunty with his breathing. i could not feed him just was not happening...he had an once of formula and stopped grunting. from then on i have breast fed. tried him with bottle the other day because i was so tired and he dont know how to take the bottle. breast bump was waste of money as i cant seem to express :/

someone on page 1 said you only have to sterlize if you use formula. i would have thought u would if you express as well?

NickyEds · 25/04/2015 19:47

I always sterilised the pump parts and bottles and the bottle I put the milk in. I had a microwave steriliser that took 4 minutes so it was hardly a chore!
