Mussels or clams? I'm off to a seafood restaurant tonight and really fancy some but am not sure. I know the guidance says yes as long as they're well cooked but I just feel these are those types of food that you always hear people getting food poisoning from!

What are your thoughts?

Ps what about scallops too - assuming these are ok!

I personally wouldn't as I'm being super ridiculously cautious. However, mussels and clams have to be properly cooked so I see no real reason to avoid. Scallops however, are usually served undercooked so there is no way I'd risk it. even though scallops are my fave food in the whole world

Cockbollocks · 23/04/2015 17:17

I wouldn't, and I pretty much ignore most of the food advice stuff. If i was cooking it then i would - if that helps.

AnythingNotEverything · 23/04/2015 17:21

To be honest I wouldn't, but mainly because I'd be too busy eating all the salmon.

Janethegirl · 23/04/2015 17:33

I'd probably eat the scallops but not the mussels or clams when pregnant.

MissTwister · 23/04/2015 17:34

I thought I could just ask for the scallops to be well cooked.....damn these eating guidelines I feel like I just pretty much eat burger and chips out these days....

I would, if it was a place I knew and had eaten in before without incident, it wouldn't cost me a thought (11 weeks here!).

Inpup · 23/04/2015 17:48

I would and have - one of my craves.

Bellabutterfly2014 · 23/04/2015 18:03

On the subject of food - I'm going to Carluccio's on Saturday - how bad would eating the pate be for me? I'm 9 weeks x

shinysparklythings · 23/04/2015 18:06

bella iirc from the mountains of reading I've done the prob with pate is it contains liver which is rich in vit A which can cause neural issues. Prob best avoided.

peppapigonaloop · 23/04/2015 18:12

I would eat the mussels etc, in fact I ate everything in pregnancy except pate and mouldy cheese although mainly as I don't like it! Woukd probably have had a little bit otherwise!

Bellabutterfly2014 · 23/04/2015 18:25

Thanks shiny sparkly - I'll opt for something else then. Hopefully there's lots of ova nice stuff on the menu xxx

MissTwister · 23/04/2015 18:40

Pate is also a no due to listeria risk!

HeyMicky · 23/04/2015 18:48

I would. Just be sure everything is open, as you would normally. If you wouldn't usually be concerned about food poisoning at that restaurant, no reason to be worried now

PazRaz1975 · 23/04/2015 19:25

I would absolutely eat the mussels and clams, as long as they are cooked they are not on the 'recommended to avoid' list.
The NHS reccomend you avoid it raw but cooked is fine - dig in and enjoy every mouthful!

SweetAndFullOfGrace · 23/04/2015 19:26

The only time I've had norovirus I got it from (well cooked) clams. So no, I'd avoid.

Lemondrizzletwunt · 23/04/2015 19:34

Miss EAT THEM!!!!

I know it's impossible, but just don't worry about what you eat...everything in moderation. For example, it's widely known that we're not supposed to eat too much tuna in pregnancy, but did you know that they mean in excess of 4 tins per week? If you eat a varied, balanced diet nobody is going to come close to that.

If you're ever in doubt, or want advice based on evidence and Cochrane reviews, go here: www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/foods-to-avoid-pregnant.aspx

something to bear in mind is that if you're craving something, there's probably a reason why. Your body wants that specific nutrient, so give in and enjoy yourself Grin

Congratulations, by the way Smile

I also would avoid mussels and clams - I've had food poisoning from shellfish in the past and it was really nasty, would not risk it when pregnant (and this from someone who would happily eat fresh sashimi and sushi - again not shellfish varieties - while pregnant.
Now I come to think of it I've avoided mussels in particular for a few years since many of the farms were closed down to increased pollution levels. They filter all the crap that's in the water..yuck!

Janethegirl · 23/04/2015 21:11

If I'd bought fresh mussels and kept them 24 hours in a bucket of clean slightly salinated water before preparing and cooking them, then I would eat them. But only then!

batfish · 24/04/2015 07:49

I had mussels the other night - at least 3 people on the table asked me if I was allowed to eat them!

batfish · 24/04/2015 07:50

Oh and I did have some blue cheese dip the other day, there were chicken wings and celery sticks and I just couldn't resist! Mother-to-be of the year award over here!

Theyvallgone · 24/04/2015 08:32

Bella I would avoid pate purely because of the vitamin A content (though that doesn't apply to veggie pate of course), as well as the listeria risk (its unpasteurised).

OP I haven't been strict at all with what I eat, but mussles/clams are one of the things I would seriously think about. Like many have said, if its a place you know and trust its probably fine, but otherwise I would be tempted to steer clear. WRT asking them to cook scallops really well ... well, that would make them much less tasty ;) haha x

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 24/04/2015 11:42

I would eat mussels and clams as they have to be well cooked. I would avoid scallops as they are usually served not entirely cooked through (and I wouldn't bother asking for them to be cooked through, as then they don't taste very nice!) I would avoid meat pate as it's usually not fully cooked. I've taken the view that if I just follow the NHS guidelines (other than with respect to runny eggs!), I am unlikely to go too far wrong. And the NHS guidelines only say to avoid raw shellfish.

PlasticCircus · 24/04/2015 11:48

I wouldn't- purely because I can't imagine a more disgusting food! But I am pregnant now and if I liked them, I would totally eat them.

I ate runny eggs and medium-rare steak in my last pregnancy too with no problems (I just happen to have gone off them this time round!). I think runny eggs are ok though anyway aren't they if they're Lion stamped?
