I am 37 wks pregnant and being treated for cholestasis.Found to have polyhydraminos at scan this week. I know this is linked to foetal abnormalities in early pregnancy, but is this anything to be worried about now? Worried!!

yes! i do know a bit! LOL i had a lot of amniotic fluid late in my first pregnancy. check this out /link{http://www.marchofdimes.com/pnhec/188_1044.asp}
i had something like 23 mm so it wasn't officially polyhydramnios but it was damn close.. i was really worried but the baby was absolutely fine, she is now nearly 4 and going to see a firework display. it CAN signal problems but in most cases is just where the water has built up over the course of the pregnancy for some reason. if it has only just been diagnosed that is probably a really good sign; at your 20 week scan was everything normal? hth

Shauna, my dd has a genetic syndrome which often causes polyhydramnios in mothers carrying them.
I never suffered at all but I know LOTS of mums who did, they were all diagnosed with it very early on in their pregnancies. As Cath has said late onset is a good sign.
With cholestasis they'll be delivering you at 38 weeks surely?
Not long to go
Good luck

i had PH with my DD.

it is a big concern in early pregnancy but later on you should be ok.

have they tested your for neonatel diabetes? as sometimes it can be linked i think.

Hi Shauna
I had polyhydramnios, diagnosed at 29 weeks. I did my research and if the extra fluid had been caused by something wrong with the baby the polyhydramnios would have most likely been diagnosed a lot earlier than 29 weeks. The biggest worry I had was that I would go into premature labour. I didn't, was induced at 42 weeks and my DS is fine.
One thing I was told, however, which may be relevant to you, was that because there was so much fluid the baby was free to move about and somersaulting until quite late in pregnancy. I was told that if my waters broke there was a that the head would not be plugging the cervix and there was a possibility the placenta could shoot out. I would have a chat with your midwife about this, about the positioning of the baby and what you should do if your waters break.
Hope this helps and good luck.

My DD had genetic problems and it was seen (polyhydramnios) at 20 week scan and was severe. I am sure later must be a good sign.

I had it with DD2 and spent the last few days in hospital being monitored. As soon as I started getting contractions they did a controlled water break and labour continued normally.
Tbh I thought it was just a build up of water and nothing to be concerned about till I read this thread!
The staff in hospital certainly never said anything to make me feel worried.
I'm sure you'll be fine, good luck!

Thanks very much for all your advice.Am going to see hospital again this morning for cholestasis bloods etc etc and am going to ask them.Very uncomfortable but feel more reassured after reading your messages! Feel like balloon ready to pop and being sick again but light at the end of the tunnel as I am being sectionned next Wed ( nothing going right this end)as I broke my back in 3 places and have an unstable pelvis, never mind the rest of this delightful pregnancy. Can't wait to meet our little girl!

I had late onset polyhydramnios with dd - who is the picture of health, no problems whatsoever!

I nearly drowned the surgical team at my e-section, but other than that - no casualties. Its very rare for late onset polyhydramnios to be the result of abnormalities, but they may check your baby out just in case: dd was checked for GI blockages by inserting a little tube down her nose to her stomach, the day after she was born (she was born in the evening). It took about an hour, she coughed a bit, I was upset, but she settled immediately and ignored it and was fine...if I remember rightly, they also took some blood.

I'm sorry you have cholestasis - have friends who have had it, and know how unpleasant it is. Also being checked for it (am 35+ weeks) as have bad itching in the evenings/nights, but very much doubt its OC as my hands/feet are ok.

FWIW, I worried too - and googled, which didn't help - but honestly, its very common late on and probably doens't mean a thing. HTH, and good luck with delivery!
