Maternity clothes what else do I need?

Right. I am 12 weeks cooked. I've never had any attraction for clothes/how I must look and my ore pregnancy wardrobe was the least stocked, barely keeps me alive one.

Nothing has changed, still a miser when it comes to clothes, and couldn't give a flying f*ck about clothes! My work is very casual (I am a university lecturer but academia tends to be informal!!). I've bought the following for a total of £60, can someone tell me what else I need?

  1. As I'll be pregnant largely over the summer and autumn - 2 pairs of mat leggings
  2. 1 over bump jeans straight cut
  3. 3 maternity bras
  4. 3 pack tee shirt
  5. Bit nicer couple of tops

Am I sorted? Home wear will continue to be whatever crap I already own that's comfy and soft.

That sounds fine. If an occasion comes up, you'll just have to get something for it when you need it.

And at 12 weeks, it's impossible to say what sort of shape you'll be by the last few weeks (some people stay fairly slim, with just added bump, others expand in all directions, and boobs and bum can both be quite unpredictable). Don't try and plan now, add stuff when you realise you need a different shape.

you don't really need maternity bras - but unless you got those stretchy crop top types, you are likely to change your size during pregnancy, both back and cup size.

Some nice summer dresses? Don't have to be maternity, just stretchy.

I'm living in leggings and dresses or wide leg trousers and long tops. Buy things a size larger, maybe, and in stretch fabrics and you don't really need special maternity wear IME.

Although I am nearing the end of my pregnancy so will only have a month of this weather when being pregnant, I have bought a couple of maxi dresses in a size bigger, loose flowy and comfortable, would recommend for particularly hot days where leggings may feel too warm

Knickers! Embrace the 'full brief' and get a few pairs in a size or 2 up. I usually wear 'shorts' knickers but the just ended up rolling down my bump and gathering uncomfortably.

madreloco · 21/04/2015 10:01

I've never worn maternity clothes and I've been pregnant lots of times. Yoga pants and long vests are always a good bet.

Stinkylinky · 21/04/2015 12:50

I'll 2nd a pp about big pants, I literally ripped a hole it the sides of my pre pregnancy pants that I tried to wear the other day! I'm 29 weeks and have gained 13lbs so far.

I have a couple of maternity bras and I couldn't live without them now, my boobs have grown ALOT!

I would recommend a couple of dresses to get you through the summer, I've found maxi/midi dresses from Primark really helpful and more comfortable than jeans or leggings when I've been warm.

KatoPotato · 21/04/2015 12:57

I'm now at 27 weeks and only bought primark £3 leggings a few sizes up, ditto tights.

The only maternity items i bought were HandM over bump skinny jeans and two dresses from ASOSmaternity for work.

KatoPotato · 21/04/2015 12:57

37 weeks!

Justyouwaitandsee · 21/04/2015 13:04

I am 39wks and very similar to you when it comes to clothes. All I've bought is two stretchy crop top style sleep bras, two pairs of maternity leggings, one pair of maternity tights and two dresses a size larger than my usual which were suitable for both work and weekends. My pre pregnancy stretchy skinny jeggings are still going strong...

CaspianSea · 21/04/2015 13:18

I'm 20weeks and just ordered my entire maternity wardrobe in one go from Next. (I have a few baggy tops and loose-fit dresses (not maternity) but most of my other clothes are too fitted and not comfortable). I decided to go for comfort and simplicity rather than style for maternity clothes. I also stuck to one colour palette... navy, orange, stone... so I can mix/match everything. From Next maternity section I ordered:

1 pair jeans (bootcut narrow band)
1 pair linen trousers
1 plain dress
1 patterned dress
1 longline cardigan
1 normal cardigan
1 long-sleeve nursing top
2 smart t-shirts
1 vest-top

I'm hoping this will get me through the whole spring and summer! At the moment I'm still in dresses with leggings as only have a tiny bump, but I want to be comfortable as I get bigger.

Thanks everyone!!!

You might need pjs/nighties at some point (for hospital if not before)? I've got some from here www.theessentialone.com/maternity-clothes/view-by-product/maternity-nightwear.html?limit=all which aren't cheap but are really comfortable.

goodnessgraciousgouda · 21/04/2015 14:14

I'd recommend something like a skirt or a dress for when it's hotter over summer as you might be sweltering in leggings.

On a practical perspective, maybe some longline maternity vest tops, and some very comfy maternity trousers to lounge around in?

Also for the summer, you might find you need to buy some bigger shoes! I hear a combination of hot weather and being pregnant can make your feet swell up a whole lot!

nicnac1603 · 21/04/2015 14:14

hello!!!! And congrats on the pregnancy!!

I am currently at 40+3 and sitting in my trackies and a rugby top, which are non-maternity.

I have been extremely lucky. The only maternity clothing I have purchased are 2 pairs of leggings (new look have 2 pk for £16), M&S maternity tights for work and 2 pairs of maternity jeans from H&M (£14 each). Other than that, for work I wore the same old dresses as ever with the maternity tights.

It will all depend on how your body changes. I have a bump that is all in one place (pretty much just between my ribs and hips). From the back I don't look pregnant at all and before I got pregnant I was between a size 10 and a 12, so the 12's are now fitting snuggly.

Just buy what you want.....look for longer tops or short dresses to wear with leggings, cardis and anything comfy!!!

All the best with your pregnancy!!! :) :)

Toothfairy87 · 21/04/2015 16:11

I am almost 20 weeks now and bump definitely shows at this stage! I ordered a few ( very good priced ) maternity tops as well as a dress from purpless maternity ( they're comfy and stretchy, mine are longline which I prefer personally and great colours and styles too so take a look ....! (mine were through amazon) and the great thing is you can mix and match these tops with whatever you wear on the bottom... I have some maternity leggings but because I will be pregnant throughout summer I have some linen trousers too from mothercare (highly recommend these!!)
Maxi dresses and sandals are a good bet for later on ... Il get some when the need arises.. And a cardi or two... And lots of nice accessories !! Exciting times!!! Xx

Kilicat · 21/04/2015 16:19

Something for the hot weather might be good - I got a pair of second hand maternity jeans on ebay (I think they were 99p plus a couple of quid postage) and chopped them down to make shorts...they were very useful over the last few days of hot weather and I imagine I will get quite a bit of use out of them over the next few months! Jeans are already uncomfortably hot on some days and I imagine dark maternity leggings will be the same.

Carrierpenguin · 21/04/2015 17:37

I like wearing maternity dresses in the summer, plain stretchy ones with a vest top underneath, nothing flashy! I saw h&m had some on the sale rack yesterday if you're interested!
