Early pregnancy and 'flu

hi there - I'm tentatively posting here. I'm 5 weeks pregnant (just had blood test to show HCG of 4000 so feeling hopeful) but came down with 'flu and really sore throat yesterday, worse today.

Is this something I just need to ride out? Or is it worth seeing the GP to see if they can give me anything for it? I can hardly think straight and it hurts to swallow and I'm feeling very sorry for myself - especially as I had the 'flu jab in November so thought I'd be fine!

I've had multiple pregnancy losses and don't want to jeopardise this one with either medication or infection - what should I do for the best??

TIA

The flu strains this year have been particularly bad and the flu vaccination hasn't managed to stop all of them.

I have no experience, but if I were you I would ride it out. There isn't really anything the docs would advise you take for it, and maybe for your own peace of mind you'd be best curling up on the sofa and resting.

Lots of fluids though if you can. Take care and fingers crossed you get well soon. x

There's not much you can do I'm afraid. You can take paracetamol but that's it. Make some hot lemon and honey, keep your fluids up and rest. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks both - sounds like hibernation is the best plan then :-)

I had horrendous flu when I was 9 weeks. Had to stay in bed for a week, couldn't even read, it was miserable. I spoke to the GP and she said to take paracetamol according to the normal dose in order to keep fever down. Also have lots of fluids and rest. There's really no danger to the baby unless your temperature goes very high, as I understand it. But you may feel more rotten than you would if you weren't pregnant.

Get well soon!

Btw I'm now 14 weeks and baby looked fine at the last scan Smile

So long as you're staying hydrated, I don't think there's danger to the baby. You just have to ride it out. I came down with an absolutely stinking awful cold at 5-wks pregnant. Not as bad as flu, but I was properly laid-up and it took me a lot longer to shake it than usual. I think something happens to your immune system, especially in early pregnancy. Rest as much as you can.
