Hi all, didn't know which section would be best to post this thread in...here goes...

Has anyone had a baby in a house full of animals? We have 4 dogs and a cat (chickens too, not that they should be much bother...) I'm just wondering how people coped with a cat that has previously been allowed to go to sleep where she likes - fave place sleeping on my feet although with all the tossing and turning shes currently taking residence on the sofa in the bedroom instead bless her...

Also, where can get an anti cat cot cover type thing? I've been told these exist but have yet to see them on any of the nomal baby gear websites...??

I'll make sure I never leave the baby where the cat can get to them, but just so as I can get some sleep tonight instead of worrying about my cat sleeping on my unborn childs head I'd be glad of any suggestions...

Thanks ladies - hope you can help!!

I bought a cat cot cover for when we had ds and tbh it was a waste of time. I set the cot up about 3 weeks before ds was born and put the cover over to stop the cat getting in.... no such luck. I lost count of the amount of times we found Rascal curled up asleep under the cover. I dont know if it is just because she is very clever or whether i hadnt attached it correctly.

This time we are not bothering as she seems to be quite good at not going in his room.

Ours fits a cot bed and if you would like it you are more than welcome to it.

I had one to fit a moses basket but never used it tbh - when ours were babies the cat wouldn't come anywhere near them (but would happily curl up on their beds/cots now). However, our cat is not allowed to roam the house at night - she is shut in the kitchen - otherwise she would wake me up jumping on my bed. Just keep the doors shut of the room the baby is in or lock the cat somewhere else...

Hi
we have six cats and we were advised by our midwife to allow the cats access to the cot to get into and smell etc before the baby comes home so they know what it's all about. Cats are naturally curious creatures so if you completely stop your cat from seeing whats in the cot it will make want to get in there more.
Also when you bring home baby we were also advised to put baby on the floor so the pets can see and smell and go up to her/him - obviously not unattended.
Sorry for long post and hope this helps

JoJO my cat had free reign of the house like yours until we had dd1. But once she was born the cat just had to get used to the fact that it wasn't allowed in our room any longer and we kept the door shut at all times when baby was sleeping. Its just not worth the risk is it!

We are expecting no.2 now, i won't want to shut my bedroom door as i fear dd1 will feel upset by that, so i shall keep the cat just in our kitchen over night when we are all sleeping. She won't like it but she'll have to get used to it!

jojo, we bought the once from clippasafe (think it was..) for around £15. But dd was in her moses basket until around 6 months and sadly our cat died when dd was this age so we never needed it...

You are welcome to buy ours for £15 inc p&p...BTW its never been opened. Just shout..

My sister has cats and she got the scat mat. When the cat jumps on the mat it gets a small shock. Eventually they learned not to go in the cot.

shhhh · 07/11/2006 15:00

lol.."The scat mat gives the cat a small electric shock"....!

Iklboo · 07/11/2006 15:17

JoJO - I@ve got a cat net that fits over a moses basket & smallish silver cross style pram. We don't have cats but MIL has. Happily they were never bothered about DS when he was there so it's never been used.
If it's any use to you, email me at [email protected] with your address and I'll send it to you. Just stick a quid in a charity box or something

MKG · 07/11/2006 15:22

shhhh --it's not bad, I tested it, it's a little stronger than when you get a static shock from another person. Not comfortable, but annoying enough to do the trick.

lucycat · 07/11/2006 15:31

You will probably find that your cat will run for the hills when she hears a baby cry - you will of course be made to feel incredibly guilty for bringing a 'new top cat' into the house, ours sulked for ages

now she just about tolerates the love that the dd's give her, but can't wait until they go to bed when she follows me round like a bad smell - I can't even go to the loo on my own!

littletoadstool · 07/11/2006 18:10

Mothercare sell cat nets - although I could only find small crib ones so sewed two together to make one to cover the cot - but since DS was born we've never actually used it because its too much faff to put it on! We just keep the door shut. Unfortunately the cat is quite jealous of the attention DS gets - he slept through the night for the first time yesterday (hooray!) but I was woken at 5am by the cat crying outside the bedroom door instead!

iota · 07/11/2006 18:17

we did the shut the cats in the kitchen or shut the bedroom door thing as well - worked for us without too much problem.

JoJo32 · 09/11/2006 14:02

You lot are fab! I'll measure up the cot etc and may well just take you guys up on your kind offers and bargains!!

Dogs anyone...?!
