Breech at 35 weeks - how to get the baby to turn?

Hi, I'm 35 weeks pregnant and the baby is breech. I have to see a consultant next week who will then book me in for a scan to try turning the baby into the correct position. Has anyone had this done before, does it hurt and does it work?? Does anyone know any good positions to make the baby turn naturally - I've only got a few days to do it though so a quick method would be good!!!

.have a look at this.....

has some tips to help turn a breech baby

elephant walking is good..walking on hands and feet with bum up in the air...need to encourage the bum to come up and the head to go down....!

ask your consultant the succcess rate with ECV too ..as does vary.......you will be given something to relax the uterus i beleive and then the baby is literally turned ...can be uncomfortable ......

but worth a try....!

will try and find some more links later on!

Thanks - will give everything a go and see if it works. Really don't want a C-section so will try anything at the mo. x

you don;t have to have a c.s if baby is breech...can be vaginal delivery........! just not a lot of consultants seem keen on it! good luck..!

Sit on a birthing ball rolling your pelvis back and forth a little. Sometimes works....

Also heard accupuncture is very successful for turning babies?

And sorry, have heard that physical turning can be very painful and distressing so hope it doesn't come to that for you. Hope someone comes along who has had it done to them and can say otherwise though As I say it's only what I've heard....

acupuncture...yes....and moxibustion done by acupuncturist.,,and pulsatilla....homeopathic remedy!

There is still time, my dd1 was breech until about 36 weeks.

I was told to spend time on all fours bottom in air, and also to sit forward on a chair as much as possible, sit at the edge with your legs spread and pelvis tilted forward - i used to assume this position whilst watching tv for as long as my back could take it!

Anyway after doing these things my dd did turn and didn't need docs interfering so fingers crossed yours will too!

thanks everyone - will give it a go and let you know how i get on x

i was told to clean the floors on my hands and knees to get ds in the right position. He was head down in the end but on the side, so I still struggled to get him out. You can ask to deliver a breech vaginally and the hospital have to go with your wishes, but make sure that if you were to do that you would have a midwife or consultant who had a lot of experience with this. One of the reasons that they try to persuade you to have a c-section is to avoid being sued if there were complications from a breech delivery. However if they are insistant that you have one and explain their reasoning, you may have to go with it.

I was advised to spend as much time on all fours as I could, using a beanbag to support bump. She did finally turn at 37 weeks -it felt like my entire insides had turned inside out .

Lulu, just looked at that site (thanks, btw) - in case any tips on turning a transverse baby: love the idea of diving to bottom of swimming pool three times in a row

Not sure I can or should, but am definitely tempted....

lulumama · 04/11/2006 08:48

transverse baby

seems that the techniques to turn a transverse baby are same almost as for breech.....as there is no mechanism to deliver a transverse baby vaginally..you will have to have a c.s if baby stays transverse..have read somewhere that you should be allowed to go into labour before the c.s is given in case the contractions shift the baby into a better position..but you'd have to be in hospital i would have thought........and it would be difficult to persuade an obs to allow this i would have thought!

so go swimming!!!!

Elibean · 04/11/2006 10:54

swim I will (if I don't sink).

I'm booked in for section at 38 weeks, and there is no way they'll let me go into labour first - have been told to get to hospital tout de suite if I do (unlikely). I have a few extra 'small clouds on the horizon' as my OB imaginatively puts it....so not going to take any risks. But if she turns, and stays turned in stable fashion, they'll let me go to 41 weeks....worth a try!

Elibean · 04/11/2006 10:57

Oh - and I did all the on-all-fours stuff with dd1 (also transverse) and she did eventually turn, though she disengaged and flipped back as soon as contrations started. Still, as I have dreadful pg piles its by far the most comfortable position to watch tv in anyway - and worth a try too - I just have to remember to close the curtains in case I scare the neighbours

lulumama · 04/11/2006 11:06

ROFL ! elibean...there's an image in my head now.........!!

Elibean · 04/11/2006 14:06

lulumama · 04/11/2006 14:08

I started a similar thread when i was 35 weeks (am now 40+2). I did the all fours, bum in the air thing every day for about 10 minutes. One night at about 37 weeks, straight after the exercise I felt the baby squirming violently and then had some kicks at the top of my bump. Definitely think the position helped.

Still had to go for a presentation scan 2 weeks later though, b/c although baby had turned, midwife wasn't sure as she said that what I now know was a bottom 'moved like a head'

Hope thimgs work for you...
