What does this pain mean?

Experienced some funny pains last night which sent me into a complete panic - anyone else had something similar or know what it is?

Woke up at 1.15am, stomach felt really hard and heavy - went to loo cos thought maybe just needed a wee and was making me uncomforatble. Went back to bed but still felt really strange - was trying to think what the pain was like and the closest thing i could associate it to was trapped wind. Went to loo again and defo wasn't trapped wind.

By 2 o'clock had period like pains and the whole left hand side of my stomach, my left ribs and round on to my back were aching like mad - sorry for the amount of detail but when i went to the loo, notice that things were a bit swollen down there.

Was considering ringing the hospital to ask what was going on but decided to just sit up and see what happened - eventually things settled down and i went back to sleep - baby is moving fine today.

I wasn't the slightest bit worried about giving birth but now it has thrown me into a spin - i was in tears thinking i was maybe going into labour and i'm still none the wiser.

Anyone got any idea's? Sorry for the long post!

I got the same type of things at about 33 weeks - right before I suddenly expanded like a whale and got myself a tummy full of stretch marks!!!

spingchicken.... i had similiar at around the same stage of preg.... i woke in terrible pain just asyou describe and i also put it down to wind. it was like muscle spasms up my sides and accross belly, by it wasnt a b hicks. dont know about the swollen though - i never looked down there!!! it never happened again, dont know what it was, probably was wind... everything was fine. ring your midwife if you are worried... best to be safe. good that baby moving as normal... sorry i cant tell you what it is.. just thought i' let you know i had same and all was fine

Hope you are feeling better now, sounds like bad BH or even where the baby has lain against you in one position for too long, were you lying on your left side?
If you are worried, call MW or labour ward.

Thanks all - thought maybe the baby was laying akwardly or on a nerve or something.

Thanks for all your responses Has made me feel less panic stricken.

springchicken, i was the same about a week ago. had hard hard stomach - braxton hicks i am sure, but also with some pain, and definite period type pains for an hour or so. am 37 weeks now, so was thinking that that was it, but no, still here.

my m/w says to not sleep on right side, always left as the artery taking oxygen to/from brain is on your right and baby can lay on it and squash it. personally i thought that was the one in your back, but..? so now can only sleep on right side! (gives you a numb hip after a while)

SpringChicken · 29/04/2004 17:03

Do you mean can only sleep on left side Egypt ??

I always thought it was the Vena Cava (Sp) in your back which got squashed, hence why you shouldn't sleep on back.

Left side for me it is then - i am so uncomfortable sleeping at the moment anyway, trying to alternative between right side, back, then left side - looks like i'm going to have a great nights sleep tonight too.

Ho hum

ive started sleeping on the settee! MW said to sleep on my left side but after a while my hip goes numb, it takes me about 10 minutes to turn over to my other side only for that hip to go numb. I even wake up on my back which then sends me into guilt mode thinking that ive starved the baby of oxygen or something. The settees far more comfortable although its a bit gross when im sweaty and keep sticking to the leather (sorry for the image that creates)

I find it more comfortable to sleep on my right side rather than my left. I asked the midwife about this as everyone always says you should lie on your left side but midwife told me so long as I was comfortable then it was fine. I do find though that I move in my sleep and often wake up on my left side but given a choice I'd rather be on my right. And I sometimes get a numb hip. Also sometimes wake up lying on my back.

I had very similar when expecting my second, at 32 weeks, I had it a few times, always in the middle of the night, muscle spasms across tummy and in my back which caused me to spend the rest of the night on the toilet, I even went to A&E, they said my musles were tight and all my insides were being squashed - nothing for me to worry about, due to baby's lying position and my posture. I hope this helps, but if you are worried, it wouldn't hurt to mention it to your midwife. Take care

Thanks all - what would i do without mumsnet eh?

Didn't happen last night and i had a great night's sleep so feel much better today - think the baby was probably lying awkwardly or something.

Thanks again for your reassurance
