Not finding out the sex of the baby

We decided not to find out the sex of the baby, i'm currently 10+5 days and have been looking at baby stuff on and off since before I was pregnant.

The trouble is finding anything nice that is unisex, the clothes aren't that great online, and when i opt for new born they have all sold out i know i have lots of time to get stuff and i'm not going to buy that much either as i know i will get lots of clothes once the baby is born, it's frustrating. Also the unisex stuff for baby's rooms are pretty naff as well.

Is anyone else not finding out and finding this well?

RedToothBrush

100% agree with your entire post, but specifically responding to say yes - dinosaurs must be worn by all!! Grin

Fattycow · 17/04/2015 19:54

Unisex stuff is so hard to find!

poocatcherchampion · 17/04/2015 19:56

Yes this is bizarre to me too - how much stuff do people need?

Couple of packs of babygros and vests.

Sorted really.

I've got 2 DDS and hardly bought anything pink what with it being a massive commercialisation for mugs

Fattycow · 17/04/2015 20:13

You don't need much stuff, but I would like the stuff for my baby to be in a nice colour. Nearly all unisex stuff is white/beige...

Catypillar · 17/04/2015 20:32

I've bought a few lovely bright things from Boots- having a boy according to the 20 week scan but I would put any of the clothes I've bought on a boy or a girl (don't trust these scans!). The only things I wouldn't consider to be unisex are things I wouldn't buy anyway e.g. pink and frilly, slogans about being a princess or a naughty boy etc.

Some of the Boots things I got-

Just saw this on the site just now and I like it- can't see why it is being labelled as "boys" surely it's unisex? www.boots.com/en/Baby-Boys-Hooded-Knitted-All-in-One-Mini-Club_1533733/

There is so much choice I could dress loads of babies without resorting to white, beige, lemon or brown.
Stars, tartan, stripes, dinosaurs, diggers, fish, fruits, rainbows and dogs, ducks, elephants and spotty prints have all been worn by my daughter and sons.

Strokethefurrywall · 17/04/2015 21:13

Urgh, try living on a tiny island where it is just assumed that you'll find out the sex of the baby and the two baby shops cater accordingly, totally divided into "BOYS STUFF (diggers, tractors, monsters)" and "GIRLS STUFF (pink, bows, frills)" - everything is shipped in from the USA and most of it is Carters (kid's brand)

I went in to pick up some onesies and sleepers and when I asked if they had anything gender neutral, they pointed me to one yellow sleepsuit covered in daisies and some stupid frills.

I ended up just shipping in some lovely Next neutral stuff and also Sainsburys and M&S did some really lovely sleep suits.

3rdbump · 17/04/2015 22:01

I am 34 weeks now and we haven't found out the sex. Its our 4th baby and we found out with the other 3.
Decided it would be a nice surprise.
So far i have bought plain white/grey/cream vests and some nice brights from next which are pretty unisex and a plain white cardi.
However when the baby is here i will buy a few pink or blue things depending :D

Notso · 17/04/2015 22:28

I love Carter's Strokethefurrywall I got loads of it from TK Maxx. I bought the cutest duck and tiger babygros.

buttercupbear · 17/04/2015 22:31

Have you tried vertbaudet they were brilliant for neutral a while ago Smile

Catypillar · 17/04/2015 22:53

Also just saw this www.next.co.uk/x553796s1#801394x55 this www.next.co.uk/g304566s1#993703g30 and this www.next.co.uk/x554796s1#482853g6z on the Next website- in the shop all they had was pale blue or pale pink!

Strokethefurrywall · 18/04/2015 01:21

I love their stuff too, was in one of the stores in Miami a few weeks back and could have bought he while store! But the stuff that gets shipped here is so gender specific which is a shame as they have gorgeous neutral stuff too. I should have probably just shopped on the online store!

SingingHinnies · 18/04/2015 02:29

Do the room neutral then order whatever colour accessories you want when your out the hospital, most stuff has next day delivery, get neutral coloured clothes and a pack of coloured socks/bibs

I got some nice multi-coloured stuff and mint green sleepsuits with DD1

Reds good and in stock here type in unisex baby in search then change to clothes

Love m&co, i got a lot of stuff from here, this is lovely

bhs have a lovely selection here

SingingHinnies · 18/04/2015 02:44

mothercare have a lot of unisex stuff

red and grey or red and white for the nursery, can add blue or pink if you wish later on, something like this here or here

going to have to stop now im getting broody and carried away

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 18/04/2015 03:19

We bought lots of blue stuff for DS / DD. Turned out to be a boy but our daughter would still have worn it all

Foraslut · 18/04/2015 05:12

This will be our 4th and were not finding out either.

Notso · 18/04/2015 08:21

It's also quite easy to do a unisex baby's room.
We decorated ours when DS2 was 13 months before then he was in our room, I was already 6 months pg with DC4 who would be sharing and we didn't want to find out at the scan. I wanted a room that would last them through toddlerhood and beyond rather than a room for two babies.

Ours has alphabet wallpaper in primary colours. Ikea curtains with multi Coloured flags on.
Then loads of frames with photos, card and pictures they have drawn. I started off just filling the frames with off cuts of wallpaper and cards I liked hungry caterpillar, Miffy etc then have swapped and added as they grew up.

Pinterest has great ideas if you need inspiration.
I think if you steer clear of matching ranges and just pick up bits you like it's easy. We have a few bits from the little bird stuff from mothercare mixed with Ikea, mixed with Asda mixed with John Lewis as well as some things we've had made or taken from elsewhere in the house and painted.

Scotinoz · 18/04/2015 11:04

I'm due with out second in a few weeks, and we haven't found out with either.

M&S were great for white vests and babygros, and Next and Mothercare had some lovely babygros which suit boys and girls.

boatrace30 · 18/04/2015 16:25

I haven't found it too had to be honest, equally baffled about the "Boys Grobag" from M&S!!
Even when the baby is born and we know the sex, we are determined not to dress it in pinks/blues.
I've also been given a load of free stuff in pale blue from a friend and fully intend to use it even if we have a girl! After all, I wear blue all the time!

AbbeyRoadCrossing · 18/04/2015 16:33

I don't find out either. I agree with pp's have a good look around the girl's and boy's sections as a lot is suitable for either. DS has a girls top and trousers with elephants on and a girl's black and white fleece. A lot of the boys safari animal stuff could be used for either and whales, why are whales for boys?
For a newborn you don't need much and people will buy you stuff too

Moffit · 19/04/2015 10:54

We didn't find out when we had DD1, everything I bought didn't fit, as she was 5 weeks early, so my mum got a pack of white vests and white babygrows in early baby - 5lb, while I was waiting for my C section in hospital and my DH went out the next day and came back with small clothes that fitted, I didn't mind what colour they were. Within a week our whole house was pink from all of the gifts! I'm currently 19 weeks with DC2, and we wont be finding out the sex again either. We have a ready made nursery in pale turquoise from DD1 (when we painted it, most people who visited assumed we we're having a boy, even though we didn't know).

Also just wanted to ask if anyone has seen the little bird range in Mothercare? It looks very 70's inspired, but there are some lovely bright clolours and patterns;

Emz1989 · 19/04/2015 13:39

I'm now 31 weeks and despite a little wobble just after the 20 week scan when I sort of wished we had asked - I'm now so, so pleased we stuck with our decision not to find out!
I agree with those saying not to be frightened to wander round boys or girls sections in shops, I stuck just to the 'white, unisex' sections for a few weeks and struggled, but have found some lovely gender neutral stuff, camouflaged in with the (usually boy) sections both in stores and online.
Lots of bright animal, jungle print things are often labelled 'boy clothes' bizarrely.
Having said that - I also think it's limited my spending somewhat, which I have been advised is not a bad thing for a first baby!
As long as we have plenty of white sleep suits and baby grows and a few lovely outfits, I'm happy that we'll sort everything else when the baby arrives!
I've bought a gorgeous khaki pram and the Buddy Bear nursery range from next, which is beige and creams.
Good luck with your search for unisex stuff!! It's an exciting time, enjoy it! X

aletea · 19/04/2015 16:07

We didn't find out for out for number two. We had enough white stuff for a few days worth of wear and then went shopping for clothes that would suit her. Tbh the first couple of months were sleepsuits only which are easy to find.
