Fibroids in Pregnancy

Hello :)

At my 12 week scan the sonographer told me I have a fundal fibroid.

In the notes it says the fibroid measures 6.4cm x 4cm, so slightly bigger than the baby.

They didn't really say much about it except I'd need to see a consultant at 16 weeks. Feeling under informed I did the silly thing of googling it and now I'm wondering what other people's experiences are of this?

Hi!
I'm 26+1 and I have 2 quite large fibroids (one is close to 12cm and the other is around 8cm). The smaller fibroid was found at the 12 week scan and the other one was discovered around 16 weeks when I went into hospital with hideous pains. The pains stopped after about 2 days and my consultant thinks the fibroid 'pendunculated' on its stalk and outgrew its blood supply. Anyway. my pregnancy is consultancy led and there is a chance I will have to have a C section but other than that they have caused absolutely no issues (since the initial pain). My tummy protrudes a little bit more than it would if I didn't have the fibroids but I can assure you, other than that, I wouldn't even know they were there. Hope that helps.

I also have a couple of fibroids and am equally confused!

I am 26 weeks now and at my consultant appointment I was basically told nothing at all! It hadn't grown since my initial scan and, all I could glean was - provided it stays where it is/ moves up and doesn't get any bigger I should be able to have a natural birth.

I am going back for a growth scan at 32 weeks and seeing the consultant again the week after. I think I will be scanned again before the birth too and it will only be then that I find out if I will need a c- section.

Other than that I have been warned about degeneration (I.e if I get pains to go to the hospital) and the possibility of premature labour.

It depends on where, how big and what type of fibroid they are. I have a posterior wall fibroid but it causes me no pain and hasn't interfered in my pregnancy as it is the "in the wall" kind of fibroid rather than the "on a stalk like an orange" kind. My belly isn't bigger either as it hasn't gotten bigger.

Not all fibroids do the same thing. They can do nothing like mine, or they can cause some discomfort as pp have said. They add mass to your belly so they can make you measure bigger than you are. They can also interfere with baby's position or engagement into the pelvis later on. So you may need to consider a C/S if the baby is left in a difficult position. They just have to watch and wait. Also post delivery, depending on how many or how big they are they can mean you uterus finds it a little harder to clamp down post delivery so you may bleed more or need a drip to contract the uterus for about 4 hrs post delivery, but that is totally manageable, and your midwife will be watching for this. Also sometimes you can get after pains when breast feeding (normally you get them with second or third babies but you can get them with first babies with fibroids), they feel like mild contractions or strong period pains depending how you look at it!! Usually making sure you take regular pain releif for a few days post delivery will get rid if those and then they stop as the uterus is going back to normal. Most return to prepregnancy size post delivery. If in the future you have problems from them you can have them removed but this usually means you will need a C/S with future pregnancies.
That is all I can remember, maybe someone else will have other things!

Thank you jmojo for all the info that's so helpful!

She didn't mention the exact positioning of it just that it was no where near the baby so I guess I'll have to wait and see
