What to wear?

During labour?? I am hoping for a water birth. I don't know what to get to wear. Thinking ahead as have 13 weeks til due date but I've seen naked, bras, vests and swim tops. I don't know what to get to take!
Or for after or if I don't have a water birth? My mum says nightdresses but they aren't me. It will be summer so I'm thinking short and vest sets?
Where can I get maternity sets that don't cost the earth?

I think most of the replies you will get will be go naked as you wont care at all and will not be self-consious.
Im giving birth next week so cant speak from experience but was planning just regular 2 piece bikini for waterbirth - which is not happening. Bottoms tie with strings for easy removals.

For birth/ after birth I am taking nightdress, not sure if shorts are practical in case you end up with c-section or they will need easy access to monitor and change your pads.

feeona123 · 16/04/2015 21:29

I was naked in the pool!

I would just get a cheap vest if you want to wear something x

roughtyping · 16/04/2015 21:35

Nightdresses not me at all either but I got one for during labour (not water birth) and one for after, then switched to PJs.

Sparrowlegs248 · 16/04/2015 21:41

Not sure shorts are practical to give birth in?!

I am going for a strappy nightie (easy boob access) and probably bikini top for water.

pinkie1982 · 16/04/2015 22:36

I did mean I would wear the bottoms afterwards, lol. Trying to squeeze a baby through one leg hole may prove a little awkward!
I'm really not feeling whole nakedness or nightdress though Confused
I know I prob won't care at the time but I don't want to feel uncomfortable in what I've got on, or at least feel like I might feel that way IYSWIM

I never wear nightdresses either, but they are useful if you have to have a catheter.

sunnyawry · 16/04/2015 22:52

I got in the water first time around. I had packed a bikini top but I don't think the bag even got opened during labour, all too much of a blur, just wore bra I think.

Zahrah5 · 16/04/2015 22:53

But if you just wear the top only and no botton then the exposure will be worse. Nightdress is at least longer and wont leave your parts naked.
Hate nightdresses too, especially those I got for hospital.

I've bought a robe a bit like this for my summer labour. Done up its quite modest but opens to allow full skin to skin.

AnythingNotEverything · 16/04/2015 22:59

I should add I bought one from primark, not for the price tag below the

sunnyawry · 16/04/2015 23:00

Just get a cheapo nighty in a few sizes up from primark, or an oversize t-shirt? Incase access is needed to check stitches etc. If you are intending on breastfeeding they recommend the ones with buttons at the top. You could move onto PJ bottoms/shorts once on the postnatal ward?

Roseybee10 · 17/04/2015 03:02

I got a nightie from primark to give birth in as s back up first time in case I didn't get my water birth. I ended up not getting it and used the nightie. I changed to pjs as soon as I showered after birth.

Second time I wore a bikini top in the pool. Changed to pjs right after.

A cheap nightie might be good as a back up incase of a catheter or c section ( I bought two in case) but I'm like you and hate nighties.

Topsyloulou · 17/04/2015 07:26

I wore a long vest in labour. It covered me up when I was walking round the room but easy access to bump etc when needed. It does get very hot in hospital, even more so when in labour so go for something sleeveless in a thin fabric. Mine was £3 from the normal section in H&M, just got an xl to go over the bump.

Ended up having an emcs so the nightie I packed came in very handy for while the catheter was in. I changed into nursing vest & pj bottoms at the earliest opportunity though as I hate nighties.

SmileyScooby · 17/04/2015 07:43

I am not a nightie person either more of a vest and shorts person but have got a cheap sleeveless nightie from peacocks was only £6 for afterwards as I haven't got the energy to go into town and hunt around primark at 36w. I don't know what I am going to do about labour wear....I might just wear one of their hospital gowns. If I can as atleast my stuff won't get messy Wink

Fattycow · 17/04/2015 07:45

Naked for pool, long shirt from DH for afterwards

LeonoraFlorence · 17/04/2015 14:24

I'm not a nightdress person but I was grateful for it after my crash section with DD1! I changed into pyjamas as soon as the catheter was removed, a few hours after she was born.
