ooh bloody hell it's that time already! right u need (well I did!)

a tonne of change for the machine.
obviosuly wash kit for you and cotton wool only for baby.
towel for each of u.
3 nighties for u - don't have the trousers if u can help it.
slippers.
undies obviously for u.
3/4 vests and sleep suits for baby.
coming home outfit for baby incl mittens and snowsuit etc.
few blankets (they look sooo cute in your own blnkets as opposed to hospital ones.) couple of little hats as well keeps little heads warm
camera/camcorder.
list of ppl for DH to ring.
bbay wipes if u're going to use them and also about 14 nappies (just incase)
a pen and something to do - ie book or puzzle book incase. erm.

thing that's all - ooh and to be safe I packed a second bag for DH which had extra's in and a set of 0-3 clothes as well as NB incase J was bigger or somehting and didn't fit NB clothes, so that was just a general over night bag type thing (we had to stay longer so it was a good idea it was ther as DH wouldn't have had a clue bless him!) lol.

ooh dried apricots as well for after (will help your pooping be soft)

munz · 03/11/2006 09:56

ooh also maternity pads - I took 30 in (was in for 5 days) and DH had to fetch some more. loads (and I mean loads) of big knickers. an outfit for u to come home in - I took maternity clothes cos u won't get back into your pre pg jeans straight away - it's only depresin if u try! lol.

munz · 03/11/2006 10:02

dressing gown - thinking of more things all the time here! lol.

with the toileries, you prob won't want anything purfumed down below but it's nice to have some nice treat yourself tpye of smellies for afterwards.

ooh also a note pad so when baby's sleeping you can think of all your feelings etc and write them down for your baby book after.

a BF pillow if you will be bf.

YellowFeathers · 03/11/2006 10:05

2 flannels.
1 for washing and 1 to put ice in and use for good pain relief!
It really does work.

I am sure you will have seen my list before Debbsy, but here we go again!!

For you...

Maternity notes
Birth plan
Dressing gown (only a light weight one, labour wards are kept very warm)
Slippers
Socks
Nightshirt (to labour in)
Second nightshirt/pj's (for after the birth - front opening is easiest if you plan to BF)
Toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, tooth brush/paste, etc. also if you plan to use anything like nipple cream or femme pads)
Hair band
Lip balm
A watch (with a second hand for contractions)
Magazines, puzzler, books, mp3 player/stereo, anything to help you relax and pass the time!
Camera (don't forget extra memory/film, batteries)
Camcorder
Change for phone and parking
List of friends and family phone numbers
Nursing bras (if BF)
Flash or anti-bacterial wipes (for the shower/bath and anything else that seems mucky)
Cheap plastic flip flops (for use in the shower)
Hair brush
Drinks and snacks (for birthing partner as well!!)
Breast pads (whether you plan to BF or not)
Big knickers, the big belly warmers, the papery disposable kind are just awful!! Check out your local market for cheap big pants, and get the biggest size you can find!!
Go to Boots or Mothercare - anywhere that does proper maternity pads, they are thicker and longer than normal sanitary towels, my midwife said to use two at once in the beginning and I still had to be careful with them then! Get about 5 packets at the ready, you will need to buy more, but that should see you through the first few days/week!
Dark coloured towel and flannel
Going home clothes (You will probably be about the size you are now when you come home, so maternity clothes will still be needed)
Bed mats, these aren't really for the bag, more for the car (and handy for in bed), if you look down the aisle in Tesco near the nappies, pampers have bed mats, meant for use as disposable changing mats, they are slightly quilted so will hold liquid, so if you line your mattress and car seat with them, if your waters should break then you won't be trying to clear up rather than concentrating on the labour!!
And for the baby...
A travel changing mat (or if you buy a changing bag with a mat on it, just take this)
Wipes and/or cotton wool - check with your hospital, some won't let you use wipes, some won't let you use cotton wool, when I had DS they wouldn't even let me bath him, so check what your hospital policy is.
Scratch mitts, most babies come out with long nails - the only reason I had to have stitches was because his nails scraped against me!
Hat
Socks or booties depending on what clothes you take in, obviously if you only take all in ones with feet in them, then you won't need socks!!
A good few bibs/muslin cloths, I'd say at least 6 - you can never have enough!!
Going home outfit - think carefully about this, it needs to be easy to fit the car seat straps around, and in November it will need to be warm!
Blanket (at least one for the trip home)
Take a full packet of nappies, you may be home in no more than a few hours after the birth, or due to the time of birth and doctors rounds etc. it could be closer to 36 hours, and new born babies (especially if BF) poo A LOT!!!
Nappy/barrier cream
Nappy sacks
You don't need anything more than sleep suits and all in one type clothes, I will take in 3 vests and 3 sleepsuits for whilst we are actually in hospital, but obviously if you want fully blown outfits then that is up to you!
Lastly I will be sneaking in some baby lotion this time, as I said, last time they wouldn't let me bath DS, and a two day old baby smelling of where it came from isn't very nice if you get my drift!! So even if I have to put some lotion on him when no one is looking, I will!!! LOL

Don't forget to put the car seat in the car, we actually put the carseat in the boot before I was any where near due last time, just in case!!! LOL Sounds silly now, but you never know when you will need it!!

I don't really know what you would do if you are planning to bottle feed, I guess you would have to ask the maternity unit if they have bottles and formula there, and if not take it in with you. Also find out visiting times so you can pre-warn family and friends!

nailpolish · 03/11/2006 10:07

lots of breast pads
lots maternity pads
lots of cheap pants that you wont mind chucking out
lots of vests and babygros - dont worry about any other clothes for baby except a cardi and a hat
small carry pack of nappies
one tub of wipes
cotton wool

amongst other things ohters have said

munz · 03/11/2006 10:09

ooh don't forget boob cream as well - have u got any? i've got 2 1/2 tubes here if u want them I can post them over - (u know my email addy)

also with the sleep suits, get those popper in the front ones - yes the poppers at the back look cute but totally impratyical for a nb (BET A MAN DESIGNED THOSE! LOL) opps sorry - can u tell we took one of those! lol - big mistake!

munz · 03/11/2006 10:10

ooh your maternity notes (don't forget those)

nailpolish · 03/11/2006 10:25

take your birth plan - makes excellent toilet roll. not much use for anything else im afraid, apart froma good chuckle after the event

mamado · 03/11/2006 10:31

not sure if its already been mentioned [no time to read whole thread with a 2 week old and 3 yr old around!] but I found my best item was a pillow. Didn't see any in hospital and it was invaluable both times for resting on/against both in and after labour. Also wouldn't really like to think of the state of any that might be provided!

NatalieJane · 03/11/2006 10:37

LMAO NP It is also good for soaking up that first baby poo

annobal · 03/11/2006 21:03

Worth investing in good breast pads as things will be a bit sensitive - I found the avent ones good but pricey (as opposed to the mothercare ones) - think andrex vs scratch and smear...

Same deal re maternity pads, the hospital ones were awful and things can be a bit tender - you'll need loads!

Good Luck!

annobal · 03/11/2006 21:05

ooh - and chamilosan (sp?) - great for anything sensitive - can use as barrier for baby and sore nipples (might want 2 tubes)

Just in case...I ended up having an emergency c section and in hosp for longer than planned, and I kept on asking my husband to bring me this and that and he always got it wrong, so it's a good idea to have a 'just in case' bag at home with extras, such as extra baby grows, nappies, extra stuff for you (clothes, knickers, etc.) Something else I had in my bag (not necessary but nice to have) were ear plugs and 'eye shield' - you know the blindfolding thingy you wear on a plane to block the light out. It allowed me to sleep during the day whilst my husband was looking after the baby.

loopybear · 05/11/2006 19:17

A sports bottle for drinking out of. hospital gave me a cup of water during 2nd stage, I couldn't cordinate to drink out of or use straw. fortunately DH had brought his sports bottle with him.

AitchTwoOh · 05/11/2006 19:22

has anyone mentioned flip-flops yet? i really wished i'd had some for the showers...

SSSandy · 05/11/2006 19:26

not much really. I was given a list with all sorts of rubbish on there including DISPOSABLE PANTS (for me!). Never needed any of it. Wouldn't worry too much. Dh will be around every day to deliver things you may need and might have forgotten.
