DS 15months nearly killed me with a heart attack today!

Me and Dp were getting ready to walk for something too buy for tea, as we were getting ready dp was looking for his phone and i was putting my shoes on ect.

Anyway DS pram was up ready to put him in. I noticed my dp had put and strapped him into his pram so we left the house... Or so i though!!

As we walked up the street ds was messing about in his pram and went flying forward onto the path Confused luckily put his hands out and didnt hurt himself but was extremly scary!

Turns out dp thought i strapped him in and i thought he did cos we were rushing. Turns out ds just climbed into his pram while i was turned for minute and it seemed he was safetly in.

He has had so many accidenta since he turned one, mainly bumps and falls. But i feel terrible about it Sad

Anyone have any reassuring advise on their children making you feel like this or do i get number 1 spot in being the worst mother Confused

When DD was about 9 months old her buggy fell over on the bus. She was crying (strapped in though!) it was all very dramatic.

I didn't tell DH.

I put my DS in his forward facing car seat, strapped him in and set off only for the seat to fall over on the seat when I turned around a corner- his dad had used the seat in his car then just plonked it on the seat in mine (hadn't bothered to strap it back in). What's worse is that the same thing happened a year or so later to his sister, but her seat fell forwards weddged behind the drivers seat. Both were fine thankfully!

One that happened to my parents with my older brother and I've always thought as a massive warning story - he was about 3 and they were walking along the street with him. Each assumed the other was holding his hand until he suddenly dashed between 2 parked cars and into the road!

Luckily nothing was coming but my mother was terrified by it, and it's rubbed off on me, my nieces and nephew think auntie noob is obsessed with traffic and holding hands. And this little bean will too!

No harm done and you'll never do it again - you're certainly a million miles from being the worst mum ever!!!

Loads of this stuff will happen.
There was a few months where my DS (2.5) was in the 'incident' book at nursery at least once a week.
On one occasion for deliberately head butting the wall so hard it required a cold compress!!!

The fact that you give a $h1t shows your definitely not a bad mum.

If they aren't bleeding or unable to walk/move afterwards, they are probably fine.

I also get paranoid around roads due to a childhood friend getting knocked down when I was little.

Mine have fallen out of bed as little babies (co-sleeping with me whilst breastfeeding)

You hear a 'Duddooffff' in the night and there they are on the floor Blush

That's just the start of it. Boys are especially bad for bumps and scrapes. U cant keep an eye on them all the time. The first couple of years are difficult until they are properly stable om their feet and learn the meaning of danger. Xxx

DS made an escape bid in Boots when he was about 18 months old. I only noticed as the lady next to me screamed. Oops!

I also kind of dropped DS on the tiles swimming pool floor when he was about 10 months. Had him in a bench, looked away for a second and he decided then would be a good time to start rolling!

You feel like crap but accidents do happen. DS is quite clumsy now at 3.5. I try not to flap and take the knocks as they come.

Go over to Relationships or AIBU to see the kind of competition you're facing in the "worst mother ever" contest.

If you're willing to be a little more gender neutral and go for "worst parent ever", check this one out

There's actually some evidence that overprotecting kids is worse for them in the long term than letting them get the occasional minor injury. Something like what happened to your DS are one of the better ways for a kid to learn not to mess around in a moving vehicle, especially when not strapped in. He also learns that he can fall and it's not the end of the world.

Letmeeatcakecakecake · 14/04/2015 18:57

Oh god I've got hundreds of bad mum stories. Wouldn't even know where to start so won't even bother. Blush

Sadly, I can beat that. When DS was about 18 months he was at the paddling pool of the local common - it's a sunken pool with a step down to it about a foot high.

We had just strapped DS in his buggy to go home when some friends saw us and called to us. We both looked up and started walking towards them - I thought DS was holding the buggy he thought the brake was on. The buggy then rolled to the edge of the step and fell in, flipping over so that DS's face hit the concrete. He chipped about four teeth and was inconsolable.

A year on, I still have nightmares about it - I felt so, so awful. But he is fine and his chipped milk teeth will eventually fall out. Don't be too hard on yourself! Accidents happen and if that is the worst accident that comes his way in his life he will be very fortunate!
