4 weeks pregnant after missed pill - pains and bleeding (And sickness!!)

Hi everyone,

Totally new to this. Just found out yesterday I'm 4 weeks pregnant. I missed one of my contraceptive pills and got pregnant from that! I'm engaged and we were going to wait to get married before we started trying but never mind! We're happy about being pregnant and may just have to change the wedding date now!! Not the greatest timing as I have a week before my uni dissertation needs to be finished and I'm struggling to concentrate.

I'm bleeding a tiny amount every day, not sure if this is normal. Have spoken to a nurse and she says its probably withdrawal bleeding from the pill, she's speaking to a dr and then calling back later. I also am getting fairly sharp pains going down both sides (But one at a time) that are almost like period pains but not.

Anyone else had this? Not going to lie, I'm feeling pretty scared. My OH is the only person that knows at the moment but he's up in Scotland working and I'm in Devon.

I'm also feeling terribly sick and have been for about a week now. Worried feeling this sick so early on might be a bad sign and might mean I'm going to get really bad sickness throughout? Got a sick bag on stand by!

Any comments will be highly appreciated at the moment!

Thanks :)

Sorry you're feeling scared but there's so many different things that can feel weird but be totally "normal" and fine in early pregnancy! Try not to drive yourself crazy with symptom spotting, sounds like you're seeking proper care and advice which is very sensible and try to relax and take care of yourself! Good luck.

Hi, I am about 4 1/2 weeks, had various cramping pains on the day my period was due, which came and went probably for 3-4 days. Had a tiny bit of pink but no other bleeding thus far, touch wood. Seeing midwife his afternoon to confirm.

No sickness though yet thankfully.

Fingers crossed for you that the bleeding turns out to be OK. And that you manage to get the dissertation handed in!

Thanks for the replies. I think the spotting may have stopped now which is good!

Another question, I can't decide if my surgery is rubbish or not. They said I couldn't have an appointment for two weeks, is this right? Should I maybe be seen sooner regardless of any symptoms, but just because I've had a positive pregnancy test?

To be honest I was surprised when the surgery booked me in for today, it was only Thursday that I tested. So I don't know - maybe I was just lucky. Saw a thread where someone was told they didn't need to see mw to confirm, just wait for booking appointment, so I guess it differs. Others maybe be understaffed and overbooked.

I'd only gone to the surgery to pick up a prescription and mentioned it, and receptionist made an appointment. (I do have blood pressure medication though, so need to speak to them about that anyway.)

Congratulations! Everything you're feeling sounds normal - cramps, twinges, sharp shooting pains - I think I had the lot :) If you're feeling like you need to see a GP urgently, I'd ask for an emergency appointment but if you're okay then GPs won't really suggest much other than that you need to take folic acid, calcium and vitamin D. The NHS are quite hands-off with pregnant women unless there is a problem. However, you do need to make an appointment for a 'booking in' session with a midwife who will go through a dissertation-length file of paperwork, take bloods/urine etc and ask you some cringe-worthy questions in the process ;-)
