Is it usual for movements to come and go a bit?

I'm 24+2 weeks, and after a very active few days, the movements have slowed down yesterday and today. I didn't feel any in the night, so I've had a cold drink and just focused on the movements, and there's been two small ones in the last 45 mins or so. I've also listened to her heartbeat on the doppler and it is there. Am I over reacting by being worried that they've slowed down a bit? Is it normal for babies to just have quieter days? Thanks

I have an anterior placenta so up until 26/27 weeks I didn't feel regular movement. I'm now 30 weeks and it's only in the last couple of weeks that I could 'count the kicks' before then there were often quiet days and nights where I would feel a little nervous. I'm sure it's fine, maybe eat something sugary and lie on your left side for an hour, but if you are worried call your midwife xx

I had this right up until 29 weeks. Think there is so much room to move around that you cant feel baby, even though they are wriggling away. Even at 30 weeks I went in for reduced movements and was amazed at how many movements the monitor picked up that I couldn't actually feel. I think if baby rotates round it could be kicking into your placenta hence seeming quieter? If worried call your midwife.

I found that she didn't really establish a more regular routine until I got to 28 weeks or thereabouts. I was told down MAU at 24 weeks that they are still quite small and can tuck themselves up, or face inwards so the kicks can be directed at your placenta rather instead.

This being said though, any worries regarding movement, always contact your midwife or the out of hours midwives for advice.

My baby is exactly the same. Felt movements since 13odd weeks but he didn't get regular and strong till 22 weeks. Now 24+6 and he's having more quiet days than not. I went to hospital the other day and she said from 24 weeks baby should have a pattern-I argued that he doesn't unlike my 2dds. Everything was fine when they checked him over and he moved but I wasn't feeling them, I'm hoping he gets stronger like he was before x

I am 24+3 and still waiting for the elusive pattern. Baby goes wild sometimes and is fairly quiet other times but the only pattern seems to be if I eat!

MissTwister · 12/04/2015 13:28

Also sometimes I think I haven't felt anything for a while (like when I read this post!) And then when I concentrate I feel them straight away so maybe I just don't notice!

PenguinTuxedo · 12/04/2015 13:58

Thanks everybody. Had a few movements since. Not as much as recently, but maybe she is having a quiet day again. I've found the number I need incase she doesn't move anymore this afternoon, I'm just worried they will think I'm over reacting if I end up calling then later.

I was told that you should have 10 movements in 12 hours- they can be all together or spread out but you should feel movements.
Keep an eye on it and phone or go in if you need reassurance from midwives. It s never a bother - trust me the Obs team much prefer telling you everything s ok and reassurance.

PenguinTuxedo · 12/04/2015 14:18

In 12 hours? My sheet says 10 movements in 2 hours, hence why I've been a bit panicky. 12 hours wouldn't be so bad.

Reduced movements in pregnancy should always be checked. Please go and get check out if you are experiencing reduced moments at any time during your pregnancy. It's a total myth that movements reduce later on in pregnancy. Please go and get checked out you can't be too careful. I'm sure everything is ok, but always get checked out

At 24 wks there are LOADS of movements that you can't feel. I am 24 + 1 and was concerned after a very quiet 24hrs. I had an extra scan Friday, baby was moving LOTS but I couldn't feel it due to the position.

Baby has plenty of room to move and you will only feel the ones that connect with your uterus.

Newquay · 12/04/2015 15:05

Ah - Just go in and get it checked out today - rather than worry in the night I think. I went in maybe 4 times with dc1 and twice with dc2 - and midwives always say that they are more than happy to check out this situation - I was never made to feel silly. Plus the bonus is that I always learnt something new about labour/pregnancy/ even tips about car parking at hospital. So it's always a win win. :) x

Justusemyname · 12/04/2015 15:05

Never worry about what a midwife might say. This is your baby. You are suppose to be worried if things seem wrong. I nearlay lost my baby because a cow of a midwife decided I was panicking over nothing. He was born unresponsive within 24 hours at 38 weeks.

Put your baby first, not a midwives opinion.

I hope everything is okay.

Penguin I've been experiencing the same over the past week am 25+1. Was going to checked out but then he woke up and had my 25wk appt anyway so no need - but I would have done and think it's totally fine to ask a midwife to confirm all's ok. They still have lots of room to move where you can feel them, but if you're worried get it checked - it's what the midwives are thee for! Obviously do try the Orange juice lying down quietly etc, it worked for me in the end

Lunastarfish · 12/04/2015 17:15

I'm 27 weeks tomorrow. I tend to find my baby takes a 'weekend' every 7-10 days and is very quiet during those period s

ChatEnOeuf · 12/04/2015 18:53

A change in movement should always be checked out. The 'counting to ten' advice is outdated and should not be still given out. Hopefully all is fine in there but there's no harm or shame in asking and being monitored. Distressed babies still have heartbeats, so dopplers are not useful in that sense.

BifsWif · 12/04/2015 19:08

They tell you not to begin counting movement until 28 weeks because baby is still so small and movements are so irregular. She could well be kicking away in there but if she's tucked herself away near your back you're unlikely to feel them. Call your midwife if you're concerned.

Count the kicks used to be 10 kicks in 2 hours, not 24, and say it's common to feel 10 in 30 minutes. They now say to report any changes in movement (after 28 weeks) rather than count a set number of kicks.
