Soya Products- mixed messages?

So, I seem to have developed a severe milk intolerance since becoming pregnant. I tried Lacto-free stuff but even the small amount of lactose that contains was enough to set me off with raging stomach cramps and upset tum; not fun at work!

My sister can't eat dairy, wheat or gluten- poor cow- and recommended Alpro soya products; I have to say I can't stomach the milk, but the yoghurts aren't entirely hideous, so I've started having Alpro yoghurt and granola for breakfast (I don't really have dairy at any other time of the day apart from cheese and I seem to be OK with regular cheese).

However, I've heard that soya products can have some detrimental side-effects in pregnancy. Can anyone confirm/deny? Is it just the usual Google bollocks? Do I need to worry with the small amount that I have every day? I know that the answer is 'probably not', but thought it safer to check.

I am vegan currently at 10 weeks, so living off Alpro's soya milk, pretty much :) ... Never had any issues. And havent heard of any from any other vegan, pregnant friends either. My midwife and GP haven't expressed any concerns either.

I guess, like anything else, moderation is key. :) ...

For example: My MIL said I shouldn't eat pineapples while pregnant as it can cause preterm labour. But pineapples are only harmful if you eat like 8 a day. Which - even if I want to - ain't happening. :P

I've been having it with no issues, never heard it was a problem.

Alpro soya light milk tastes nicer than the full fat version, and it doesn't take long to get used to the taste. Plus the bonus with it being slightly sweeter than normal milk there is less need for sugar or sweetner and it makes a lovely latte :)

i've been having the strawberry version in the little carton, as I can't stomach drinking the milk version. Its an easy way to get some extra calcium.

I too know that soya has some downsides but I can't remember what they are and think the amount I'm having is going to be ok.

You could try Almond milk or coconut milk?

Thanks all. Thought it may have been a dose of the paranoia creeping in!

I can't drink 'straight' soya milk; long story but we had a relative who was terminally ill and all they could tolerate towards the end was cartons of soya milk and I've learnt to associate the smell/taste of it with death...(that's kinda grim, but it's really put me off)

I might try the almond stuff though! Thanks for the tip.

Basically if you've "heard" some random factoid with no source, no info, and no proof, you can pretty much safely ignore it as bollocks.
There is no reason to avoid soy milk products in pregnancy. Well, other than they are beyond revolting at any time.
We use oat milk as well as nut milks.

You can make smoothies with the soya milk, good as snack or breakfast and you can't taste the soya

I've consumed plenty of soya products and soya milk throughout ivf and pregnancies with no problems. In some Asian countries a lot of soya is consumed, if it were a problem then they would have identified it by now!
