Really scared about 20wk scan - any tips?

I've been scared about my 20wk scan since my 12 wk one! It's now close - next week - and I'm increasingly nervous about it. I just don't know how to prepare myself for it all. Everyone else seems to think it's the exciting one where you get to find out if it's a boy or a girl but I'm just so worried because to me it's the one where they check for problems. Really wish I would get some proper kicks this week to reassure me! I'm getting flutters but no proper kicks yet. Any tips for how I can calm myself down and deal with things as they come? I think I'll be a wrack by next week.

Hi Fox. Can't offer too much in the way of advice, I just wanted to offer a hand to hold as I'm feeling similar to you. I have my scan next week too (which day is yours?) and I'm beginning to get quite nervous! I'm too only getting flutters, not proper kicks but I'm happy at least to feel something! I guess we just have to think that whatever happens is out of our control at this point, and worrying about it is only going to cause you more stress which obviously isn't good for you or baby.

Thanks pinkie, my scan in on Wednesday. I know you're right, just have to get a bit of mind-over-matter I think, but it's a challenge!! All the best with your scan!

Hiya! Just wanted to say hello as I've got my scan on Monday afternoon and am sooooo nervous about it. I can't get excited about something called an 'anomaly' scan - they couldn't have picked a more worrying name! Fingers crossed for all of us!

pinkie87 · 09/04/2015 12:54

Mine's Tuesday, do come and update as to how it all goes! :)

MuddyWellyNelly · 09/04/2015 12:57

It's normal to worry. I used to get perhaps disproportionately cross with people who talked about it as if it was merely a sexing scan. But the flutters are enough of a reassuring sign at this stage. I started getting them at 19 weeks. At my 20 week scan, the baby was flipping about and stretching arms and legs everywhere, and I didn't feel a single one of them. It's totally fine for this stage.

Try to remember that any anomaly is rare, and a serious one even more so. The vast majority are completely healthy. Good luck.

Hi, sorry I can't really offer any advice but I'm another in the same position. My scan is on Tuesday and I've been worried for weeks now. I think I've felt flutters but I'm really not sure, I can't wait for the whole regular movements to start just so I know that the baby's still in there. And yes I'll probably regret saying that when I'm being punched and kicked at 2 in the morning Smile
I just keep reminding myself that the chances of anything being wrong are very low but it doesn't stop me being far more scared than I was for the dating scan. I also keep trying to think of it as just finding out if we're having a son or daughter as it's simply much easier for me to process than the real reason of the scan.

Hello! I also have my scan on Monday. Like you I have only felt flutters and no real kicks yet. I'm sure it's normal to worry a bit - I try to keep that in mind before I start worrying about worrying :)
If you are feeling anxious then maybe explain to your midwife about how you are feeling and perhaps she can reassure you about the whole thing as well.

Again can't offer advice, just wanted to say this is also my situation and I feel exactly the same - glad to know I'm not the only one! The list of things they check for is daunting and I'm quite worried at not really feeling much movement. I keep thinking I can feel something but can never really be sure. All the more stressful with all the women on here talking about kicks at 16 weeks! Desperate to feel definite movement. My scan is next Friday and Im hoping to feel something before then!

dillydollydarling · 09/04/2015 17:59

I had my 20 week scan this morning and I too was really nervous. Thankfully everything was fine and in the majority of cases, there aren't any problems. Its only in the past week or so that I've been able to feel definite movements so I'm sure it will come soon for all of you Smile

Good luck everyone Grin

I was really nervous about it, in both pregnancies. They didn't find anything wrong in either one. They really don't, in the vast majority of cases.

Not everybody gets strong kicks by 20 weeks. I didn't with DD because I had an anterior placenta (placenta in the front, which cushions the kicks you feel). An anterior placenta doesn't cause any problems. The kicks get stronger over time in any pregnancy, as the baby gets bigger, of course.

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 09/04/2015 22:02

I've got quite a lot of movement but that doesn't mean that everything's ok, does it? Any more than not feeling movement at this stage means that there's a problem? I thought that how early you feel movement more depends on whether it's your first pregnancy, the position of the baby and placenta etc. So just because you don't have much movement isn't a reason to worry. At least, I'm worrying myself silly even though baby is kicking me lots! At times I've even managed to convince myself that the baby is kicking so much because there is something wrong (mad, I know)!

mellymoo22 · 09/04/2015 22:09

Hey, I was feeling exactly the same, I had my scan today and have been feeling anxious about it since my 12 week scan, I've not felt much movement, maybe some flutters but not sure. Scan went well and my little girl was moving around like crazy, gave the sonographer a hard time.
I know how hard it is not to worry but please try not to, it's amazing to see your baby in so much detail. best of luck x x

It's lovely to hear I'm not the only one feeling like this. Thanks for all your feedback. Congratulations to those of you who have had happy 20 wk scans and fingers crossed for all of us who are still waiting. Here's hoping for lots of lovely, healthy babies :)

Hope your scan goes well today Lorelai :)

AbbeyRoadCrossing · 13/04/2015 13:32

I think it's normal to feel nervous - I always am!
I hope this doesn't come across as worrying you more but if they do find an anomaly it's not necessarily bad. With mine the sonographer went quiet and muttered something about a second opinion and left the room in a hurry. I hadn't been shown the screen yet so had no idea what he'd seen. Turns out I had low lying placenta and I have DS here now so all's well.
So if you're one of the tiny % that gets an anomaly most of them can be dealt with and chances are everything will be perfect
