Flying

Would you fly long haul during your pregnancy? My consultant and acupuncturist have stressed that they would really prefer I didn't (IVF but straightforward pregnancy). I was planning to! Any thoughts gratefully received! Thanks

Depends how many weeks into the pregnancy and how long the flight would be and where, I went to the USA which was around 10 hrs when I was 10 wks but not sure I would want to travel that far now at almost 24 wks.
Other factors that would come into my mind would be depending on where what is the likelyhood of getting a dodgy tummy, what the heat would be like and god forbid something happens what the healthcare would be like.

I just flew long haul at 19-21 weeks. Was fine, although was starting to get a bit uncomfortable at times. Wouldn't have wanted to do it much later.

I flew USA-UK at 19/20 weeks. Doctors were fine with it. I had flight socks, and was told to drink plenty of water and move around on the flight lots. It was fine. Wouldn't fancy it so much now I'm 30 weeks though.

Relocated to singapore at 6 months pg, 13 hour flight. It was fine but I wouldn't choose to do it. It's pretty uncomfortable.

I flew longhaul at 14 weeks and found it no different than normal. I flew shorthaul at 29 weeks and was uncomfortable and the short journey made my feet swell even though I kept hydrated and moved around a lot, not to mention the painful cost of a fit to fly certificate.

I flew to Australia at 11 weeks and Barbados at 32. Was fine. Normal rules of flying apply - stay hydrated, move around as much as possible, make sure you have insurance

I flew to Oman at ca. 22 weeks, ca 9-10 h flight. Was fine even though uncomfortable at times. But got green light from my doc first, wouldn't have gone if she had said no.

I flew to Australia at 7 weeks and back at 11. I wouldn't recommend it as l felt terrible the entire flight and l've done it many times (even with dd) and never had a problem.

Plenty of water, moving around and flight socks.

I flew to and from the Caribbean at 22 and 23 weeks. Absolutely fine, drink plenty and keep moving was the advice from my doc - which would be my advice even if not pregnant!

eurochick · 09/04/2015 09:03

I flew to the Maldives at 20 weeks and the U.S. for work at 23 weeks. It was also an ivf pregnancy and no one suggested I shouldn't fly.

I made sure I had good insurance in place and was diligent and moving frequently and drinking on the flights.

I flew to San francisco at 9 weeks pregnant and was just a little sicker than usual. Everything else was fine. I did have to go out for dinner with clients at the other end which was 2am my time though. That part was hellish ...Angry

HazleNutt · 09/04/2015 09:39

Would and have. Consultant didn't see any issues.

Wear support socks and move around plenty. After 28 weeks you'll need a letter from gp or midwife.

AbbeyRoadCrossing · 09/04/2015 12:51

It depends when and where to. I wouldn't risk the third trimester personally due to the risk of giving birth abroad - I had a preemie and found it stressful enough in the UK! I had some lovely holidays at around 14 weeks and 20 weeks though.
It also depends on how your pregnancy goes e.g. if you book something and then you get a pregnancy related condition you might not be insured so best to book things near to the time you'll go.
Also check with airline - they all have slightly different rules. And pack your notes in your hand luggage. Have fun!
