MissTwister · 08/04/2015 08:40

Hi All

I am looking to buy a pushchair - I was going to go new but have seen quite a few second hand for sale locally. I was wondering if there were any tips on buying second hand - i.e is there anything I need to watch out for?

Also are there any guides to how much one should pay - currently am looking at second hand bugaboos

thanks!

Have a look on eBay at sold prices or previous auctions. Bugaboo Bees seem to go for around £250-£300 depending on accessories.

We got our Uppababy from eBay and it's been great, although the steering is a little bit suss. If you're buying locally I'd ask to take it for a test drive. Check the wheels and brake mechanism. If you're going for a Bee, there was an issue with the wheels shimmying on some older models I think.

Check it's from a smoke free home, ask where it's been stored when not in use.

Thanks TinyMonkey!

I think it is the 2011 bee which had the wheel problem. that said, the bee wheels can be replaced.

I bought a bee on ebay for £216. That included the instructions, raincover and footmuff. I have seen cheaper deals including the coccoon etc as well as for other bugaboo styles. I haven't actually used it yet as baby isn't due until July but I've pushed it around the garden a few times and it seems fine so far. It looks almost brand new.

If buying off ebay I would read the description very carefully. Most sellers will highlight flaws but I would be suspicious of brief descriptions and cut and paste jobs. Unless it is brand new there will be something not perfect (in my case a few scratches). I'm also wary of listings with only 1/2 pictures, again, being cynical, i would assume the seller isn't being completely honest.

I would also try to get one with the instructions so you know what version you have, I believe there may be some slight differences with accessories/spare parts based on the version of the bugaboo.

NHS etc will advise against buying a second car seat as you don't know if it has been involved in an accident so if you buy a seat, check it carefully.

We bought a bugaboo chameleon off eBay. Collected so could inspect before handing cash over. Was half the rrp and have been very happy.

With the bugaboo you can wash all the fabrics so we did this before use.

The seller was a professional seller although made no mention of that in advert.

I got an old bugaboo bee for £99 on a Facebook selling site, and sold it for the same later on - brilliant! There's often good deals if a new model is out as people want the newest one and sell the older ones.
As others have said take a good look at it, push around, try brakes. Depending on what you go for and condition it might be worth researching the cost of parts that need replacing

Also try gumtree for second hand prams. You may want to consider getting a new mattress for the carrycot part - this is easy to get for bugaboo as they sell every individual part through their website. You could also keep an eye out in mothercare etc as they will occasionally sell off their ex display models at a good reduction which would mean you get an almost new pushchair and can register the warranty yourself. Sometimes they have website clearance deals on old models or fabric colours too.

When ever I've looked buggabo's always seem really looked after and do hold there value.
What ever u do, do not buy a second hand car seat, I am a trained car seat fitter. so if u do want to use a car seat on the frame then just see if it comes with the correct adaptor.
I hope that helps

Thanks for advice all. A close friend is donating the car seat so that bits covered. The Bugaboo Bees I'm looking at are £350-400 2-3 years old, does that seem about right? With accessories such as cocoon, liner, shade etc

OP posts:
Lunastarfish · 08/04/2015 21:58

That seems a bit expensive for eBay for a bee, a brand new bee without cocoon (but with liner & shade) is approx £539 & you'd get a guarantee with that.

Cocoons are also often sold separately on eBay for approx £30.

MissTwister · 09/04/2015 19:26

I thought they were £750 when I looked on John Lewis! Do you know where I can get for £539?

OP posts:
irishamy89 · 09/04/2015 19:35

Hi Miss Twister, sorry for hijacking but the £750 Bugaboo is the Cameleon!
Go on to the Bugaboo website to ensure you are certain of the model you want or go to a department store.

TarkaTheOtter · 09/04/2015 19:41

You can get a second hand bugaboo bee for around £100 with accessories. If it's more then it's probably a Bee Plus of Bee3.

IME bugaboos are like cars nod it's always worth buying second hand. Have a look on your local Facebook selling site or gumtree.

MissTwister · 09/04/2015 22:13

If I go to John Lewis and add the Bugaboo Bee 3 base, chair, carrrycot, cocoon, sun canopy and footmuff etc it comes to over £900. The £539 is for a basic chassis but you need all the extras to make it suitable for a newborn no?

This is all so confusing!

OP posts:
MissTwister · 09/04/2015 22:15

And sorry the Bugaboo I have seen locally and like is a Bee+ with lots of accessories including cocoon, footmuff, extended canopy, sheepswool liner, drinks holder etc. This is £400, perfect condition 1.5 years old

OP posts:
irishamy89 · 09/04/2015 22:23

Miss Twister, the bee comes with chassis, wheels, canopy and seat as standard new.
If you were buying new you would just have to buy the cocoon and footmuff. Go on to the Bugaboo site and look at the list of what it comes with.
Then you can go on to 'accessories' to price the extras.

MissTwister · 10/04/2015 07:03

Thanks Irishamy, I went to the bugaboo site and added the buggy, cocoon and footmuff and it came to over £700 then adding the other accessories it has such as extended sun canopy, wool liner, parasol etc it came to a total of £900. Therefore £400 sounds fair no as its pristine?

OP posts:
Lunastarfish · 10/04/2015 07:46

I suppose it depends if you want all the accessories.

I'm not bothering with the pram/cocoon/wool liner as baby is due in the middle of July - they look boiling! I just bought a generic head support to make it a bit more cosy.

The parasol doesn't have great reviews and looks v bulky IMO. I'm just going to use muslin over the hood.

MissTwister · 10/04/2015 07:52

I am due end July but you need a cocoon for new born though no as they have to lay flat? I think the footmuff is also important as it lasts for a few years during winters. And so will the liner. Parasol I could take or leave. The deal also has car seat adapters too. And a extended sun canopy that the lady said was actually very useful for when the sun does shine!

avocadotoast · 10/04/2015 08:23

Something to keep an eye out for as well (depending on how old the buggy you're buying is) is whether it's still under warranty and whether warranty is transferable.

Someone I know bought a Stokke pushchair off ebay, chassis was sticking a bit and was difficult to fold, but because it was still under transferable warranty she got it replaced brand new.

cookiefiend · 10/04/2015 08:31

There are often local shops who can service a pram too- it's about £40 here and they will fix steering, creaking etc and clean it up like new so might be worth considering if you get a good deal and there are any issues.

MissTwister · 10/04/2015 08:34

Thanks all, you've been really helpful. Think I am going to go for it - first thing I will have bought!

OP posts:
Lunastarfish · 10/04/2015 08:52

I don't think the cocoon is necessary. The bee lies flat and babies in car seats attached to bees and other travel systems are not lying flat...

Like I said it's up to you if you want the whole shebang - it's your baby Smile. Have fun buying your pushchair, funnily enough it was the first thing I bought too

Lunastarfish · 10/04/2015 09:08

Forgot to say, £400 sounds good good for the full set!

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 10/04/2015 10:02

sounds like you have already gone for it but just wanted to add the bugaboo bee is a brilliant buggy I am still using at 2.5 and love how my clingy daughter can still parent face :)

just check which footmuff it is as the newer ones velcro on. I have a buggy snuggle and its a nightmare to take on/off to wash!!

also if u have any issues or want to buy/sell different hoods/accessories theres a few good facebook groups I used when I first bought it Grin
