Gender scans- how accurate ?

I'm sure this will have been posted before but I'm curious. Due ds2 soon. Was correctly informed at 20 weeks scan first time around that was due to have ds. They were right however on one of my local Facebook mummy pages there seems to have been a fair few posts of instances where the local hospital have got the gender wrong.
During our scan this time around the sonographer was a little reluctant to share the news of gender as 'it wasn't the purpose of the scan' ( think she was having a bad day) but did inform us at the end we were expecting a boy. Since the scan I've got used to the idea or two boys however since seeing the recent posts have started thinking what if perhaps they have it wrong. She didn't show us his 'bits' or seem adamant.
I've heard it's more common to be told girl but then have a boy.
Is this true ? Or is there a chance they could have it wrong.
For some reason this time around I've bought mainly neutral ..... And my son keep saying he wants a sister ( he's only 2).
Probably over thinking but I'm used to the idea of another boy now , what's likely good they may be wrong?

A boy prediction is more likely to turn out to be correct, as it's made from seeing the necessary parts. Our scans were very obvious - the sonographer showed us the screen!

You could get a wrong girl prediction from a boy baby hiding his bits between his legs, or just awkward positioning making it hard to see properly.

I know some hospitals are generally reluctant to predict gender at all or even guess in case people complain when it's wrong. Might explain your sonographer?

I was incorrectly told girl at 20 wks to find out at a late scan (38wks)that baby was in fact a boy, saying this I have 2 girls and 2 boys and only had the problem with ds2 but he was in an awkward position, I'm now expecting baby no5 and have recently had a private scan and found out we are expecting a girl but I'm always a little dubious and have my 20 wk nhs coming up which I will ask again. I wish I was patient enough to have not found out esp with already having 2 of each but we got rid of all our baby stuff after dd4 being 'our last baby' so we decided it would be more practical to find out. Also we have 3 baby boys recently born in the family so we wouldn't of needed to buy much. Saying all this I did have a friend a few years ago who was told she was having a boy but had a baby girl.

I think you are more likely to get a reliable answer from a private gender scan. The NHS scan is to check health, it's not the main priority of the sonographer. But if you are paying to find out privately I found they take a long time to be sure, even asking you to return (no charge) if it isn't apparent.

I know a lady who was told she was expecting her 3rd daughter at the 20 week NHS scan, sonographer was adamant, bought everything pink and she gave birth to a boy!
