Is cystitis a problem?

I am a long time cystitis sufferer - I get it mildly 6-7 times a year and seriously 2-3 times, where I need antibiotics.

I am now 7+3 with my first baby and have got it for the first time since I got pregnant. A couple of sites have said it may be linked to a small increase in the chance of miscarriage whereas others say that is only when it develops into a secondary kidney infection. Does anyone have any clearer advice? If it's dangerous I will of course see the doctor ASAP but have an appt booked a week today and will also need short notice time off in the next couple of weeks for family reasons so if it isn't a problem I'd rather treat it at home. Thanks.

Kidneys work overtime when pregnant, main concern is infection. So it's better to pop a water sample off to the doctors to make sure it isn't an infection. My doctors will let me do that and then write a prescription for me to pick up if it's needed, worth seeing if you can do it that way rather than scheduling an appointment

Thank you, I haven't heard of that before but would be really helpful if I could do it that way. I'll give them a call at lunch.

Any urinary infection in pregnancy needs treating to prevent risk of complications. Get down to the doctors with a urine sample! Smile

I don't want to scaremongering, I really don't want to worry you but I would beat myself up if I don't reply to this.
With my second pregnancy, at 27 weeks, I had a very bad, prolonged but of cystitis that turned into a kidney infection. It was extremely uncomfortable and painful.
One evening I suddenly felt strong contractions. I knew what they were as I had been pregnant before. I was rushed to hospital where they managed the stop the labour. I was in hospital for nearly a week and was relieved everything was ok. I was told that the kidneys are close to the womb and the pain from the kidney infection tricked the body into thinking labour had started. This is common.

To cut a long story short, my DS was born at 42 weeks, a very good weight and seemingly healthy. But after 2 long, difficult years he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Using the MRI scan of his brain and how the disability affects him, the neurologist was able to pinpoint the early labour scare as the culprit.

My DS is now 20 years old and is a handsome, intelligent, witty young man. He is in a wheelchair but went to mainstream school. But he is also an angry young man who is struggling to cope with his disability. I'm full of guilt but try my best to stay positive for him.

So please, please take care and make sure you listen to your body and that you get the right antibiotics.
Take care and look after yourself. I wish you a very healthy pregnancy. I'm sorry if I have worried you or anyone else.

Thank you 3across and I'm so sorry for what you and your DS have been through. I will call the doctors today and organise something as soon as possible.

Right so there is an Urgent Care Centre in a hospital round the corner from my office, I just tried calling them to see if this is something they would be able to help with as they are open 24h so I could go after work today. No answer - does anyone know if this is something they deal with?

Yes I don't see why not Smile

I had cystitis in very early pregnancy and was prescribed Amoxicilin which apparently is safe to take. So get yourself to the Drs so they can check if your infection is susceptible to Amoxicilin treatment and get it sorted asap :) xx
Ps - I also suffer from it regularly and I was told not to use the sachets from the chemist while PG so antibiotics seems the best option...

Thanks for all the advice. Just back from the docs with antibiotics so have taken the first one now, hopefully should be on the mend soon!
