Any ideas? Is it likely to happen again? Did this effect your care plan during the pregnancy and birth?

Any information or experiences would be much appreciated

I had IUGR with my first. I was induced at 36 weeks and my son spent 8 days in special care. He was on a glucose drip to regulate his blood sugar, and had some jaundice, but was otherwise fine.

I was under the care of a consultant with my second, rather than midwife led care. I had extra growth scans at 28, 32 and 36 weeks and all were fine. The consultant discharged me at 30-something weeks and said she was happy for me to have a midwife led birth, rather than the heavily monitored induction the first time around. In the end my daughter was delivered by paramedics as I didn't make it to the hospital! Very quick natural delivery. 7lb 1oz and home the same day.

Two very different experiences, but both children are absolutely fine now. If I were to have another id probably go for a home birth.

Are you pregnant now? Good luck!

My DS had a slight growth restriction. This time round I'll have scans at 28, 32 and 36 weeks, so they can assess the growth curve. I guess the further care depends on these results.

My first child had iugr. Had extra scans during second pregnancy but everything was fine. 2nd child over 3lb heavier!

My DS had severe iugr due to placental insufficiency and was delivered at 27 weeks. He's 2 years old and fine now, but the 3 months after his birth were very hard. I'm pregnant again and I'm taking low dose aspirin and having extra scans at 24 (because I insisted! ), 28, 32 and 36 weeks. Am 17 weeks now. The consultant I saw a couple of weeks ago was pretty positive, so fingers crossed all will be fine. I am a bit nervous though! Good luck. I don't know anyone who's had iugr in rl so it's nice to hear from others who have been through it.

Hi Sleepbunny, it's a scary time after IUGR with your first. I remember feeling very anxious. I was consultant led rather than midwife led and as others had extra scans at 28, 32, 36 weeks. I was told it was hard to assess the growth much before 28 weeks. It was fine and baby was double the weight (10lb compared to 5lb!). I was told it was unusual that it happens again. My first was undiagnosed until birth so was reassuring to be told at 28, 32 weeks etc that second was a good size! Hope it works out well for you xxx

Thank you all for your lovely responses!
It's nice to hear other stories and not feel so alone.
I had IUGR with dd who stopped growing at 30 weeks. I was already having additional scans due to a few other factors, so was quickly picked up. I was induced, and luckily dd was born naturally with very few issues.
I'm now 8 weeks wth dc2 and already worrying about what's ahead. So lovely to hear that it's doesn't tend to happen again.

Ds1 was iugr. Had similar monitoring as above and aspirin with ds2. Monitoring more frequent as concerns were noted. Ds2 born by elective cs at 35+5. He was the correct size for dates though spent a week on nicu due to rds (from the cs) and risk of nec (due to known placental insufficiency). Now a very normal 2.4 year old. Now pg with Dc3 and am again on the same routine of monitoring and aspirin.

I had suspected iugr 1st baby. I'm pregnant again have been put on low dose aspirin and having extra scans. The 32 week scan they noticed 'slightly static growth' so I had to have an extra scan, all was fine. I have my last scan next week so will be interesting to know how much he has grown and what they will do if he hasn't. When I tell people I am due next month they are all very surprised and ask where my bump is. Funny, because I feel HUGE!
I was put on consultant care from my booking appointment and got an appointment with a consultant from then.
Not much else is different from my first pregnancy really. Just the extra consultant appointments. Oh and the midwife said she is not allowed to measure my fundal height because I am under consultant care!?!
