Fundal height not changed for six weeks

Namechanged in case midwife is on here.

I'm 37 weeks and my fundal height has been 32 weeks since 31 weeks, are you still with me Wink. All measured by the same midwife (she works for a service which contracts out NHS antenatal services, like One to One service)

She didn't seem concerned that it was staying at the same height and not changing but at my 35 week ante natal she sent me for a private growth scan to check everything was ok. Sonographer said everything was fine (no more detail than that, just everything fine) I've just had my 37 week ante natal and fundal height was still 33 weeks. Midwife looked a bit quizzical and then said 'oh lets check it again and see if we can't stretch it out a bit'. It then measured 34 weeks. She wrote 35 weeks in my notes Hmm.

I'm probably worrying over nothing but feel like I want to call the antenatal team at the hospital and check with them if they think it is ok that it still hasn't changed? I suppose i'm not feeling very confident as the service I am using is very anti interventions and I feel like she might be brushing it off as something the hospital would worry about but she doesn't (she said as much when she said 'oh lets see if we can stretch it out). But then I had a growth scan and everything was ok (with a private company not NHS) so maybe I am just being paranoid?

Sorry height was still 32 weeks not 33 and she 'stretched it' out to 34

Fundal height is not accurate as your height and babies position would affect this, it's only to give a rough idea. If your worried tho ring your midwife and tell her your not happy. She probably put 35 on your notes as if your anymore than 2 weeks above/below they are to send you for a growth scan

oh yeah, I had that (no change for 4+ weeks). Baby felt fine & was fine when they did the fancy scan (lots of pretty colours!). I don't know what your growth scan involved, but if it involved looking closely at placental function and blood going in and out, then it sounds like the bases have been covered.

Did you get any reports from scan with actual measurements?

strawberry01 · 03/04/2015 15:12

At 40 weeks my fundal height was measured at 35cm (despite being exact at every other appointment). Had a scan at 40+3 and was told the baby would be "small" but everything was ok.

Baby born 40+9 and was a healthy 7lb.

If the growth scan was ok then try not to worry.

I measured exactly what week I was until 36 & never measured any bigger baby was born 39+3 7lb 4oz. If they have checked everything on a scan & there's no other issues ie reduced movement high blood pressure swelling that kind of thing I wouldn't worry, sometimes the way the baby is positioned can often affect the measurements

Does your midwife track your fundal height on a graph at each appointment? The whole point of this new thing (wasn't done when I was pregnant four years ago) is to flag anomalies in growth and ultimately prevent stillbirths due to placental failure and other things - hence being sent for a growth scan if your fundal height is off. It's quite new which is why previous posters are telling you not to worry. Chances are there is nothing to worry about, but equally this type of monitoring has been implemented for a reason, and the midwife should follow the guidelines.

It bothers me that your MW measured you at 32, "stretched it out" to 34 and then wrote 35cm in your notes. I mean, why do that? Is it really too much effort to refer you for another scan, or to a consultant?

bakingtins · 03/04/2015 18:27

I would not be that bothered if fundal height was less than number of weeks, but I think it not increasing is a concern, and your MW deliberately recording the measurement incorrectly is massively unprofessional and would make me doubt her competence and integrity. Phone the antenatal team, better to be checked and waste time at a scan that turns out baby is fine than to miss a potentially serious problem.
Did they check placental blood flow at the scan ( pretty colours in the umbilical cord?) whenever I had growth scans I was told what baby measured in weeks, where she was on centiles and estimated weight. The upward trend is more important than the absolute measurements, when there was concern about my baby's growth she was scanned at 28, 34, 37 weeks and delivered at 37+5 weighing 5lb 3oz, all on the NHS. You seem to be paying privately for substandard care!
