Not immune to rubella - should I worry?

I just got my blood test results back from my booking appointment and apparently I'm not immune to rubella, despite having the single jab when I was 13. I can't have the jab now, so only have to worry if I come into contact with someone with it from now until I'm 20 weeks (am 14 weeks tomorrow).

Am quite happy to get vaccinated, but am feeling a bit worried - I honestly assumed rubella was one of the conditions that you didn't see anymore. If people could put my mind at rest - have you ever come into contact with someone with rubella nowadays?

It's not common any more, but it is out there.
Only a few hundred cases in England/Wales each year now, down from thousands in the early '90's - see

<a class="break-all" href="http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/20140505192926/www.hpa.org.uk/web/HPAweb&HPAwebStandard/HPAweb_C/1195733842982" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/20140505192926/www.hpa.org.uk/web/HPAweb&HPAwebStandard/HPAweb_C/1195733842982

The most recent data are 2013 - 533 cases confirmed.

Rubella (German Measles) is fairly rare due to the vaccination programme of the MMR jab.
This is information should be useful: www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Rubella/Pages/Introduction.aspx

It is really hard not to worry, but try not to. I've certainly not known anyone have Rubella or German Measles and it is rare.

Thank you - I figured it was fairly rare and my mum who has worked in a primary school for the last 20 years reckons she's never seen it, but having read about some diseases coming back due to people not vaccinating, I just wanted a sense check!

I was also not immune to rubella while pregnant, I didn't really worry about it to be honest and tried to stay away from grandparents (who are in a nursing home) and washed my hands a lot.
Don't worry you'll be grand.

They do annoy me - it isn't that you aren't immune, it is that your antibody titres are too low to detect. This can happen when people develop antibodies due to transfusion too - give them blood with those antibodies on and they will still have a reaction, even though they can't detect them in the lab...

I have similar but different to you in that I'm not immune to chicken pox. It does make you worry but if it's obvious you're pregnant most people will be careful around you. Like you say most people are vaccinated so it's very rare to hear of rubella in the UK.
Perhaps, if you are travelling abroad at all, check whether where you're going has many cases of it. All the best
