Her big brother will kindly contribute a 6 year old bugaboo, a third hand sling and a cot requiring a new mattress .....

..... But even so that's a pretty poor show with ten weeks to go!

Anybody want to chat baby kit?

Expecting number 3 soon - really don't NEED to buy anything but am being seduced by the Red Castle Cocoonababy - anyone love/hate it? It's a s**tload o money TBH for what wont last long but.... if it helps!

antumbra · 31/03/2015 13:22

You may "need " less than you think.

Items which I never used for may babies were:

cot
pram
bibs
muslins
bottles
steriliser
changing table
changing mat
bath thermometer
special towels flannels etc ( just used the family ones)
sheets
swaddles

scrivette · 31/03/2015 13:24

15 weeks to go and mine has a washing up bowl to use for it's bath and a miniature pot of Sudocreme I got free.

I am hoping it's a boy so I can use all of it's brothers clothes when it arrives.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 31/03/2015 14:24

Other than bottles and steriliser, I used all the things on antumbras list! Muslins were a god send (reflux baby). My point being every baby is different and it makes sense to wait until after the baby is born to figure out what you'll need. With online shopping/24 hour supermarkets etc it's easy to get hold of things as and when you need them, rather than buying for every eventuality.

antumbra · 31/03/2015 14:39

Exactly- that is the point I was making.

Every baby is different and every Mum is too, and what is essential to others is useless to some.
I used a sling on a daily basis- I know others don't like them.
I didn't want to use a changing table- I was always too worried my babies would roll off and land on the floor- but I know some Mums may have bad backs and find that uncomfortabe.

I did find I needed scratch mits- my babies clawed their faces- other babies don't.

I would say wait - by the very basics- and besides I loved all those shopping trips to Mothercare after my babies were born- they were cooed over by everyone !

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 31/03/2015 14:46

I love the Mothercare trips too!

Normal4Norfolk · 31/03/2015 15:30

Well, my DD just complained that she never had one of those overhead lullaby light show things. So best add that to the list!!

Seriously though, not wanting to scare you or anything, but my DS was born at 27+5 and we had nothing ready for him. And he was a 2nd child! No crib, no new mattress, no pram suit... the pram wasn't sorted, no buggy board for DC1. He was in hospital for 6 weeks but I was so knackered pumping and visiting I didn't have time to shop. On the day he was due to come home I had to tell the nurses they had to keep him for a few more hours while I went and bought him some stuff. They gave me a horrible Hmm look, but HE HAD NO CLOTHES!!!!. You can never be too prepared!!!

Have fun shopping!

BasinHaircut · 31/03/2015 15:59

OP as this is your second this isn't relevant to you really but for first-timers - get the basics and no more. Use the numerous trips to Mothercare in the days/weeks after the birth to get everything you find you need. Its great practice at getting out of the house with a newborn and you feel 'safe' there if the baby needs changing/feeding, and you can get a coffee and cake in my local one now, and they run baby groups!

LittleBairn · 31/03/2015 16:15

normal I agree. I was in hospital from 21-26 weeks then strict bedrest until 36 weeks I was so glad I had the majority of things in early.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 31/03/2015 17:09

To be honest I bought most stuff online anyway. I don't remember going in many actual shops!

LittleBairn · 31/03/2015 17:13

So did I but buying 2nd hand on ebay and gumtree requires time. Not something people with early babies have an abundance of or if you are like me on a ward with no Internet connection.

RabidFairy · 31/03/2015 17:40

3rd (unexpected) baby here. Have barely bought a thing! We have moved DS into a bed, which went swimmingly, so the cot is free, just needs assembling. We have plenty of baby clothes at least for the first 6 months which is handy as due to changing jobs my mat leave is going to be very, very hard work moneywise.

My mum went a bit mad and very kindly bought us things like a steriliser, an electric breast pump and bottles, some nappies. We've bought some nappies as I've always found it good to stock up well in advance. We need to buy a baby monitor as I broke the last one (put non-rechargeable batteries in it in a sleep deprived funk!) Bought new sheets and blankets. Want to buy a sling still.

flowerygirl · 31/03/2015 20:09

My second is due in just over 6 weeks. Collected double buggy yesterday and apart from that have bought dummies, new moses basket mattress and a new bath seat. Having a surprise again so have plenty of new born neutral clothes ...so will just wait for gifts Grin Although apparently second children don't get many at all!

NakedBaby · 01/04/2015 01:26

Last time I was very proactive about NCT sales - so had plenty of £5 baby chairs and other fail-proof items. Plus got given loads (cot). Got buggy off gumtree.

Fed karma - and liberated pretty much everything as soon as it was done with (apart from anything else - had a housemove since last baby. Anyway - last baby was meant to be the last baby.)

Just not had the energy to do the sales this time around.

I have no intention of buying armfuls of 'outfits' - but I think we will need to buy more than Ewan before the baby comes.

Off the top of my head:

  • car seat
  • new cot mattress
  • a place to put the baby down in the kitchen (ie baby chair)

I'll add to it as I think of it.

Not bad NakedBaby

37weeks here, still need to buy the car to fit the car seats in... yes 3rd baby!

Have had to spend a few months persuading DH that we don't actually need a minibus.... (outing myself here!)

Muslins might not be a bad idea, I vaguely remember buying huge ones from ebay last time that we were able to swaddle the baby in...

NakedBaby · 01/04/2015 11:31

DD to be does however already have a wonderful shiny new name waiting for her.

On reflection - I think I might be channelling all my nesting urges into researching custom made jewellery to match her name (I haven't ordered yet - but I was going to get a little commemorative medallion thing personalised for each of the existing DC shipped from USA .... And I have a nice print to go on the wall above her cot..).

Jewellery and art prints - new baby essentials Grin .

You menaces have made me buy a mamaroo... Got it on eBay with the newborn insert but if DH ever finds out the cost im done for! (Lighthearted - no financial abuse here !)

SmileyScooby · 01/04/2015 20:07

34 weeks, Dc1, haven't got much yet - car seat, pushchair, crib to go in our room for early months, a few clothes we've been given as gifts. Need to sort out nursery so have somewhere to put stuff as I don't want to go buying stuff and have nowhere to put it.
