When did you buy your first baby thing?

I am 11 weeks today and went shopping with my mum and very nearly bought my baby's first outfit. However... I didn't want to somehow jinx it... So, bought nothing (ok not nothing I bought myself a nightshirt).

So, when did you buy your first baby thing?

xx

I know the thread asks when we bought anything for the baby but thought I'd share that the first thing bought for our baby was a toy rattle from my mom.. I'd told my mom I was expecting whilst on a shopping trip. :)

First item me and DH bought was a lovely two pack pjs after our booking appointment at 10 weeks...funnily enough the two pack worked out lovely as we discovered it was twins at our 12 week scan. :)

Not bought a thing, but been given heaps, makes me feel unorganised, but nice not to have to stress over it. I do want dh and I to choose first teddy bear together. Which will do on day of 20 week scan

i'm 11+1. Haven't bought anything major but did buy a Simba babygrow set and matching towel almost immediately after finding out.

Have also bought 3 cardigans and 2 knitted hats.

My DParents have bought about 6 Christmas outfits out of the next sale.

I had an MMC last year and all I wanted to do when pregnant was buy something so I figured this time I would and it is such a lovely feeling. I have already had a good scan this time too at 9 weeks.

Trying to hold off major shopping now, think we are going to find out whether boy or girl so may aswel wait until we know for most stuff. will be hard though haha!

I didn't buy a thing until my 20 week scan except for things like a Doppler and books on being pregnant etc, but those were for me! After the 20 wk scan, we've been buying odd things as we see them, as it makes the pregnancy feel real for me! Smile

We did buy the pram too, as it was very expensive and we were getting it half price (it was about to sell out - but is being kept at my mother's house) but we're saving the rest of the bigger things until much later on, like the co-sleeping crib thingy and cot etc.

Currently 25+3 and have bought 1 outfit and a bouncy chair! ( Someone selling one cheap). Bought the outfit at around 16 weeks to Dh's disgust!
We've got some bits including Moses basket in my sister's loft and need to get up and look what's there. We're going to a huge market on Monday to really start and I'm hoping to get the pram there.

I'm only 12+1 and DH has already been out looking at prams and cribs but I have forbidden him to buy anything yet. I might buy a few maternity clothes after my scan this week because my clothes are already tight and uncomfortable and I have resorted to wearing my sports bras.

martinsgirl · 05/04/2015 08:21

We bought a toy giraffe a few days ago after our 12weeks scan :)

I don't believe in this whole jinxing malarkey (although each to their own)... My mum bought my first ever baby grow for DS when I was 8 weeks..with my DD I bought her first outfit at 17 weeks after a private scan showed she was a girl. Nice to celebrate the occasion..
Sadly she died after complications in labour, and we dressed her in that first outfit that I bought.. :)
Pregnant again and will be buying his/her first outfit after sex scan.

Best advice would be not to fret about jinxing & buy things in the sale when possible!

Superexcited · 05/04/2015 08:27

I'm not fretting about jinxing, more concerned that we haven't cleared the spare room yet and have nowhere to put things and I don't want to spend money until I know everything is ok and the money won't be wasted.

perfectlybroken · 05/04/2015 08:28

In my first pregnancy I bought a pair of hand knitted baby booties at about 2 weeks pregnant! Then from about 12 weeks onwards. It doesn't bother me to buy things early on, knowing that things might not work out. 2 weeks was a bit much though! After my first I had 3 miscarriages, one quite late. I had collected a few things for the baby but felt fine about passing them.on to my sister and my friend who were also pregnant.

Missymum6 · 05/04/2015 08:45

With my first after our first scan, went crazy and brought stupid things that are still upstairs unused (she is 15 months) like newborn wellys and a rainhat! I've restrained myself so far (im 19 weeks) but I've put stuff in my h and m shopping basket online!!

bonzo77 · 05/04/2015 09:15

At about 28 weeks with my first I think. The consultant told us to get ready for an early baby. So we did! With my second I got replacement bottles etc when I noticed them on sale, probably around 30 weeks. Now 16 weeks with number 3 and not planning on getting anything apart from nappies and a new steriliser. Maybe a co sleeper cot if I seems necessary once baby arrives.

avocadotoast · 05/04/2015 11:02

I bought a little outfit when I was about 8, 9 weeks maybe? I felt really rebellious, I was by myself in Asda and figured nobody would know if I got it!

I don't think it matters when you get stuff really...someone on here once said something like if anything bad does happen, you having bought baby stuff won't make a blind bit of difference. So if you want to get stuff, go for it!

Elledouble · 05/04/2015 11:11

First thing we bought was a little pair of starry red pyjamas in the Mothercare sale just after Christmas (so maybe around 25 weeks?). I've got a pair very similar so we just thought it was cute Blush

We have left everything quite late though - only got the pram this week and we're 37 weeks!

londonlivvy · 05/04/2015 14:16

At 35 weeks, but then we were moving house and there was no space for anything baby related until we moved. I was being v relaxed about it until my MIL reminded me that DH arrived at 36 weeks... I went that night to Tesco for nappies and a few babygros.

We were lucky though because my sisters gave me lots of old baby stuff (buggy, cot, bath insert, changing mat) and so we didn't need to save up for big stuff or research bargains etc. The car seat was the only really pricy thing we had to buy and we were always going to buy that new in any case.

MissTwister · 05/04/2015 14:43

Gosh this has panicked me a bit. Am coming up to 24 weeks and have nothing apart from the promise of bits and bobs from people.

How long does a pushchair take to order and arrive?

Elledouble · 05/04/2015 15:08

Depends on stock. My MIL ordered our pram a week ago and it arrived on Wednesday.

DP and I bought a pack of babygros and some tiny socks after an early scan at 8w. Picked up a couple more a few weeks later, after realising we'd bought 6-9 months (oops!). Since then, we've been buying odds and ends as we spot them, mainly second hand. At 18w, and have bought a sling & moses basket (2nd hand), a few odds and ends, and today bought a load of 0-3 month clothes (about 50 items for £15!!). Have also been given all sorts by friends & family, mostly used items, but does include some things that are not going to be usable until 2016 - or perhaps 2017. (And a few I don't even understand)

Main purchase though, is a new (well, 7yo) car! Have new job in opp direction from DP's so is v useful to have now, but without bean on the way would have worked around it. (Original car literally cannot fit a baby seat in back so alternative essential in Ruralshire)

I am essentially a minimalist (baby now has more clothes than I do) and don't love having all this stuff that won't be used for ages. However, if we can keep the baby stuff and general costs down, we can have a couple extra months of parental leave, so I've chosen to start scouring eBay now rather than walk into the shops with my card later on (tempting though that is!).

I am trying not to think about 'what if'. It took 3 years to get a BFP, 16 weeks to believe it would stick, and now that it's kicking me in the kidneys I'm bloody well going to enjoy it while it lasts. And if buying a tiny hat along with the apples makes me or DP happy, then in the basket it goes.

OK, this is long - I am clearly procrastinating and should go do some work!

Superexcited · 06/04/2015 19:08

DH went to the shops today and looked at some prams. I have told him we are not getting one for at least another three months (I am only 12+2), he looked so disappointed because he had spotted one he likes with 35% off the price and the sale ends later this week. He is just going to have to be disappointed for a few more months.
