High risk

Hi all,

I am currently 21 weeks pregnant with my first and have been told I am high risk and have to go into a consultant led unit rather than the midwife led unit in my local hospital. This is because my BMI is two points above the threshold for a low risk delivery apparently. Why is this necessary if I have had a normal pregnancy...which so far it has been...and if I am perfectly healthy, which I am. Does anybody have any experience of this, or any information as to why I should have to be continuously monitored during labour/ delivery. Sorry if I sound a bit thick, but I really don't want to be strapped to a bed on my back for the whole experience!

Cheers

Di

hi - by BMI - do they mean body mass index???

ledodgywizardrobespierre · 31/10/2006 12:19

Are there any other factors wother than yur BMI that mean you are high risk. I ask because our hoispital class you as high risk if you have 2 or more factors classed as High. When pregnant with ds my BMI was classed as just high but I did not need to be constantly monitored because I didn't have any of the other factors they ask abourt.

*other

Lulumama, yes, Body Mass Index.

No, no other factors as far as I'm aware, although this might change obviously as I progress.

that;s a new one one me!!!!!!!!

i was high risk

previous c,s
suspected DVT
previous bleeding in pregnancy

and certainly not on the thin side!!

and had a normal vaginal delivery.....

erm.. i am really amazed that this makes a difference..do you know why this makes you high risk?

tillsbluegirl · 31/10/2006 12:32

No idea at all Lulumama, guess they just don't like fat birds...lol. They were very clear that I would be continuously monitored though, and would miss out on all the "nice" options, such as use of the pool, aromatherapy massage etc, that are available in the midwife led suite. I have a midwife appointment in another 4 weeks so I will ask them then...

can i just say..what a load of rubbish! IMHO...of course, i am not an obstetrician...but i fail to see how carrying a smidge of extra weight takes you out of the natural birth equation.........unless i am really missing something..........!!!!!!!!!

which hopsital is this....!

if you are 2 points above BMI..you are hardly obese....

i was not weighed once when pregnant...i'm really stunned!

lulumama · 31/10/2006 12:36

if you want to go for midwifery led delivery and they say no...you can change hospitals....

continuous monitoring can have a massive impact on your ability to labour well.......as can being stuck on a bed ...

i would definitely take it up at the next appointment...
