Did anyone suffer with their teeth while they were pregnant. I have v bad tooth ache - well teeth ache actually as can't tell if it is a particular one.

Will the dentist treat me while I am pregnant if I need a filling etc.

Yes, the dentist can still treat you. I had a filling when I was pregnant; the dentist gave me a different anaesthetic to the one he would normally have used, and he used a different material to fill the tooth. I then had to go back after dd was born to have the filling replaced with a normal one.

Yes,had horrendous time in late pg.You can have temp fillings if needed but they cant do x-rays obviously. If you are in uk you are entitled to free treatment and for a year post birth.

That is reassuring thank you.

I will contact dentist, but am sure there is nothing visible, so ideally would need an x-ray.

The reason I am so anxious about it is that I had a tooth removed about 6 months ago and the pain was unbearable and it just feels like I am about to go through the same thing again. 2 teeth in 1 year! By the time I am 35 I will have none left!! Am 33 btw.

Hey sorry to thread barge - congratulations on your pregnancy Toppytoes I am TTC (5th cycle) and am in the dreaded 2ww when you think absolutley everything is a sign but I just wondered - I am 8dpo, cd26 of 28day cycles and my gums bleed both last night and this morning, I thought it was really odd. Any thoughts? thanks! probably just wishful thinking!

Tippytoes · 31/10/2006 12:10

Hi MrsMcJnr - I am only into my 7th week of pregnancy, so early days, but yes my gums have been bleeding more than usual lately, so maybe a sign - good luck to you and hope you are!

hiya, at about 30 weeks i had the most awful toothache, and eventually the dentist took it out, they initially wanted me to take paracetemol till baby was born, then get x rayed, but it gradually got worse, couldnt sleep, eat or drink, so if i were you i would go see the dentist asap!! take care and good luck!! xx

I have had a tooth removed twice while pregnant...1 with baby no2, and again 2 months ago with this baby (no4)

My teeth dont take too kind to being pregnant lol, maybe its to do with the baby taking all the goodness, who knows lol, but I always have problems with my teeth while pregnant

The dentist will certainly treat you..just use different filling materials etc...

good luck

My teeth suffered terribly when I've been pregnant.
My gums bleed at the slightest thing. I even had to swap to a baby toothbrush as they werent as harsh on my teeth.
I also had to have fillings both times but luckily my dentist gave me white ones and didnt charge me for it. In fact he was still giving me the white for no charge even when my first maternity exemption ran out.

I think there are concerns with metal fillings and mecury content when pg.

I've had something similar to this. In first pregnancy all teeth on bottom right ached but I didn't see the dentist until after the birth. It got worse when breastfeeding and I had x-rays and all fillings removed and replaced - nothing obvious found.

Now pregnant again and teeth hurt in exactly the same place but this time I've brushed with sensodyne and I'm taking Osteocare calcium supplements. Not sure how things will be when breastfeeding again but this had made it manageable.

Sorry to hijack but have been wondering if the mysterious 'free dental care' I've heard about when you're pregnant is only for people registered with an NHS dentist? And what does it actually cover?? Anyone know?

comeoveneer · 01/11/2006 13:21

Smittals - free dental care is only avaliable whilst pregnant and for the first year of baby's life if you areregistered with an nhs dentist, if private you still have to pay. It covers all the treatment avaliable under the nhs - so most things other than certain types of crowns/bridges/dentures and no implants. HTH
