Plan was to reuse as much of DS1's stuff as possible... But the Bugaboo just smelled too musty and the Car seat past it's 'use by date' so I'm getting a new one.

However, the old fabrics and footmuffs for my old one are fine and I've made a brilliant baby fund from FB and Ebaying it all in bits.

Bugaboo Cam3 with CabrioFix, adapters and Familyfix Base £939 (My mum bought!)

Extra 'Sunny Gold' Fabric Set £75

2nd Hand Mamaroo Seat and insert £200

Tommee Tippee Perfect prep - £45 instead of £120

Avent Steriliser and Starter set - £65 instead of £150
More bottles - approx £35

New Moses, Crib and Cotbed mattresses - still to buy.

Still have Angelcare monitor, gro eggs, and other gadgets from DS1, and all his newborn clothes, vacuum packed and labelled 0-3 3-6 6-9 etc...

BucketFullOfDinosaurs · 07/04/2015 10:46

Midnight, could you buy the big things secondhand yourself and then get people to give you the money?

We bought very little - about £150 on washable nappies, plus another £50 or so as we've gone along and I've spotted secondhand ones at good prices. New cot mattress, about £30. Throw to cover the sofa, £5 in IKEA... and that's been about it. Have been very fortunate to have been given or lent a lot of stuff, and we also just haven't really bothered with some things. Hasn't been too bad.

aletea · 07/04/2015 19:48

I spent £140 on a sling alone today, and I'm only 3 weeks pregnant! Ha ha ha!

Lewaney3 · 07/04/2015 20:05

Hi ladies!
I'm in awe at those who are budgeting and being thrifty. I did have a budget but it went out the window from 12 weeks onwards Blush

This is what we have spent so far for our twin arrival in June/July.

So far have spent about £250 on baby clothes. This includes tiny, newborn and 0-3 months size.
£50 on a wide variety of blankets. Most in sale Grin
£65 tomeetipee steriliser set/bottles
£250 spend in mothercare - Moses baskets and stands. Baby bath. Baby towels. Muslin cloths. Baby caddy.
£45 on fisher price bouncer
£15 twin jumbo playmat.
£99 baby monitor

Yet to buy: £200 on car seats. And £1300 on twin icandy. £135x2 fisher price swing. And other bits and bobs to fill the baby caddy.

I've not even taken into account cost of my maternity clothes/hospital bag items.

However I'm hoping to reuse a lot of things as these will be our first babies :)

whizzyrocket · 08/04/2015 00:24

So far, not very much. This is child #2 for us but we were given an awful lot first time around. Lucky. What we weren't given we picked up cheaply- our pushchair cost us £26! But on certain things (like the pushchair!) we regretted it.

This time around we plan to buy a new:

Batch of baby blankets- my little boy would be distraught if we took his!
Car seat- our silver cross one my little boy outgrew at six months, so we basically didn't go anywhere until he could fit the nine month next stage up. This time we're thinking of going for the Britax Dualfix. £350 but long lasting and fits the rearward facing til 15 months law.
Pushchair- we are an active family, and have managed to break the second hand three wheeler with heavy use. This time we'll spend another £350 on a Babyjogger Summit.
Oh and we'll need a chest of drawers as well, so that's another couple of hundred.

I think it's worth paying for the stuff you'll really use. I did utter thriftiness the first time and I think this time I'm going to enjoy having stuff that really works! Second hand togs and toys are great but I want a solid pushchair.

GinIsCalling · 08/04/2015 01:13

Baby one - about £1500, although big chunks of that (bugaboo, crib, bouncer) were gifts from grandparents. This baby - £45 ( a new sunshade for bugaboo to make it look new, and a first outfit to bring her home in, then She can wear hand me downs).
Thank goodness we saved everything!

SmileyScooby · 08/04/2015 07:50

Expecting DS1, currently 35w and so far we've spent:
Buggy £400
Car seat £100
Crib £40
Mattress £40
Basic baby clothes from supermarkets: £35
(So far all above been covered by parents money gift on both sides)

Have been given a few clothes from people at work (both new and 2nd hand) haven't looked at how much I spent on clothing for myself but again it was only cheap supermarket maternity gear mainly for work/going out, at home I've been wearing men's jogging bottoms, xl tshirts and hoodies :)

Still got to get furniture for nursery but looking at ikea so probably about £100 for drawers and unit, cotbed for nursery (will probably get nice one from John Lewis with vouchers), paint, curtains, carpet etc for nursery. Other bits like changing mats, changing bag, bits for hospital bag still to get.

Oh and we also had the large purchase of a bigger car as both myself and DH had small hatchbacks, still got my three door which will be fun (not!!) with car seat but hoping to get the base that can be belted/isofix as my car doesn't have isofix :(

Ok after writing all that out I'm going to make a spreadsheet as that is adding up!!

pinkie87 · 08/04/2015 12:27

This is painful reading. I'm only 20 weeks but have already bought:

Changing unit (ebay) £180 (should have been £400)
Nursing chair (ebay) £40 (should have been £160)
Mamas and papas swing thingy £30 (should have been £80)
Clothes and sleeping bags about £70

Still need to buy Britax affinity travel system, Car seat, Bednest. And other smaller bits, muslins etc. Getting baby monitors, sterilisers, cot and other things from family.

sockmatcher · 08/04/2015 12:44

If we were to have DC3 we would need

New cot mattress.

Car seat. I'd probably borrow and spend money on next stage extended rear facing. However if not easy fix base and cabrio. I wouldn't but family fix as that's only compatible with a forward facing pearl.

DaleyBump · 08/04/2015 12:49

£15ish for clothes and she'll be sorted until about 6 months. She'll hopefully be breastfed so no formula, we co-sleep so no cot and I already have slings from having my son.

BabyBrownEyes · 08/04/2015 12:59

My pram alone cost £700. The car seat was an added £130...I spent best part of £400 on a breastpump ans I stopped counting there. Ive 2, less than 3yrs apart but still spent a couple of K each time! :( They're expensive lil beings. As for the new mattress thing, do you think you get a new mattress in the hospital, or a hotel..? Nahh. I stuck with mine, cost £120 when my eldest was 5months old...my youngest is now the same age & its as good as its always been. **Quick phone SS!!!

emzii206 · 08/04/2015 13:07

I dread to think how much we've spent ??. I am a self-confessed snob and as much as people will hate me for saying it, I will only buy the best for my baby! I cringe when people offer me second hand stuff, and politely decline! My baby girl probably has more clothes than me and her dad put together, even though I'm well aware she will grow out of them before she's had chance to wear them all....I know it's ridiculous, but I just can't help myself!! I see pink/frilly/sparkly/pretty things and I just have to buy them :D I've gone the whole hog, with a Moses basket, rocking crib, cotbed, changing unit, pink travel-system, a mountain of clothes, baby swing, bouncer.....all of which are pink! I know I've gone to the extreme level of baby shopping, but when you read a baby book and it gives you a list of "baby essential" I despair at the thought of trying to take care of a newborn with such a tiny arsenal of baby supplies!! The NHS website tells you that a newborn only needs 6 stretchy sleep suits....only 6?! I don't plan on spending the first few weeks of my daughters life doing endless loads of laundry thanks!!

sockmatcher · 08/04/2015 13:29

Babybrowneyes the mattress advice is due to sudden infant death syndrome. Incredible you choose to spend money so frivolously yet scrimp on £50 for something like a cot mattress

Superexcited · 08/04/2015 13:35

Yes, new mattresses are essential for babies. All the research and health advice says a new mattress drastically reduces the risk of SIDS. It really isn't comparable to an adult staying in a hotel and not having a new mattress to sleep on.

nennyrainbow · 08/04/2015 14:36

I'm shocked! I have 4 kids, aged 13 months to age 10 and I reckon I spent about £500 total for all 4 of them on essentials such as cot, bedding, pushchairs, bouncers, baby car seats, baby toys and baby grows. Mostly bought from car boot sales / ebay / charity shops apart from the car seat.
Those of you expecting your first, why don't you just start with the basics and get the rest later if you find you need them? Some of the things on people's lists I've never heard of! The first few months disappear in such a haze I found that you hardly get to use some of the stuff ( fancy outfits etc) that you've been given.

Superexcited · 08/04/2015 14:41

nenny I have 2 children already but I am starting from scratch with buying baby stuff as it has been more than a decade since my last baby and I got rid of everything. The only non essential thing that I am buying is a baby swing, but I still reckon we will be spending £1k and half of that is the travel system (with car seat). I have bought cheap pushchairs in the past and it proved to be a false economy.

nennyrainbow · 08/04/2015 14:43

That included a new cot mattress for dc1 only, which has been kept clean with a waterproof sheet and passed on to the others. I suspect that any link between 2nd hand mattress and SiDS might be when you get one from a home with a smoker in. In any case, dc4 seems to spend more time in our bed than anywhere else and we didn't buy a new mattress for ourselves.

RL20 · 08/04/2015 14:49

You've done well there, OP!

Interesting question, haven't added it all up before now! Shock.

Expecting my first baby this month. We have bought a mixture of charity shop buys and brand new buys, and have also been given clothes and a cot. Baring in mind I was entitled to the Sure Start Maternity Grant of £500 as baby is my first, as I was on income support for a short time after finishing work for maternity leave.

Clothes/muslins/accessories - absolutely no idea, a few hundred at a guess?

Pushchair (Travel system) - £250 reduced from £500 in Mothercare.

Moses Basket with Bedding - £20 reduced from £27 in the ASDA Baby Event.

Moses Basket Stand - from a charity shop, can't remember exactly how much.

Moses Basket Sheets - £7 or so from Mothercare (still need to get some more, though!)

Tommee Tippee Bottles - around £15.00.

Milk - £10 ish.

Nappies - Have bought a bulk box from Amazon for a reasonable price and also a few of Asda's own.

Blankets - Made one myself and others have been made for baby by relatives friends or have been given to us.

Cot - Given to us (need to buy a mattress and bedding though!).

Everything else I bought is probably not 'essential' so there's my list!

nicser · 08/04/2015 17:59

I've rented a bednest so It saves me money in the long run, my children never stay in a Moses basket/swinging crib that long but the bednest you rent until their 6 months

harleyclaire · 08/04/2015 18:07

Oh gosh some of u ladies r so thrifty I need to take a leaf outta ur books....I have a 3yr old 2yr old and 1yr old and I've only ever bought new including a £1000 plus pramBlush and a £500 pram plus several more prams BlushBlush I have spent thousands on designer clothes and shoes and the best of everything else....fortunately bf 3 babies has saved a bit but I'm shamefully splashy when it comes to the children

harleyclaire · 08/04/2015 18:15

Emzii206 I'm the same as u....I'm deffo snobby when it comes to my DC although I do cringe at how.much I spend x

cherryade8 · 08/04/2015 18:43

I have a mixture of more expensive things like an icandy I used for dc1, which was a great investment as I walk loads and used it every day for 3 years. I plan to reuse lots of clothes and have some second hand stuff.

Ime babies really don't care whether you spent 50p or £500 on something Grin so I only fork out where something is easier for me to use or washes well (eg I found m&s babygros great and worth the few pounds extra vs supermarket).

I will set up a junior isa for dc2 from birth, same as for dc1, so any savings I make by not overspending on stuff can go in their bank accounts Grin

CheerfulYank · 09/04/2015 05:40

Not too much as this is my third, so we already have a swing etc. My dad made our crib, but it will need a new mattress as DD will be taking hers to her toddler bed soon.

I got a few outfits. Not too much, they grow so quickly in the early months. Some glass bottles...I need to find all the bits to my breast pump! I'm going to try to cloth diaper this one more. I didn't at all with DC1, do about 30% of the time with DC2. Hoping to do much more with this one. :) Oh and I got a Moby wrap.

That's about it. I feel pretty chilled out with this one. He's going to share a room with DS1 eventually so no need to decorate a nursery or anything. I will get him a personalized quilt when he gets here and I know his name. :)

CheerfulYank · 09/04/2015 05:43

Oh and I will need a new car seat!

emzii206 · 09/04/2015 10:48

@harleyclaire my husband tells me off all the time!! He's says "you are such an insufferable snob!!" My reply?? "I would rather be a snob and have a well-dressed child than settle for second best!".....I now know why people don't like me haha
