I KNOW I shouldn't have done this BUT

I had a nuchal scan done privately and still went to NHS one....

I now have a private result of 1:2590 and an NHS of 1:170 and feel quite distresses about the difference and that the NHS seems quite high risk.

The reason I went private was a v complicated early oregnancy where we discovered I was carrying identical twins one much stronger than the other. We were then told when one failed the other almost certainly would too as twin one would cause probs to twin two. As it was twin one virtually disappears and twin two has appeared to grow normally. We were looking at a v late NT scan as back log at local hosp and from my research I felt having bloods done earlier would give a more accurate result.

I know I shouldn't have had done both but it was impossible not to have another peek at my baby. I will be 39 by due date.

If anyone can shed any light on the discrepancy I would be v v grateful.

I am not sure I understand why you think you shouldn't have gone to both scans?

OMGBabyNo3 · 28/03/2015 17:34

The private place told me not to in case I got differing results that distressed me!!! I'm not sure why I should get such differing results (I realise I should have asked them this).

Have you thought about something like Harmony testing? Also a screening test but higher accuracy that the nuchal testing? You would probably need to get it done privately but it could put your mind at rest?

Justusemyname · 28/03/2015 17:58

Did both places ask the same questions?

OMGBabyNo3 · 28/03/2015 18:10

Yes I think so Justuse. The private one felt much more detailed and a lot more time was taken looking at the nuchal fold/nose etc...

I have had a quick look at the Harmony test this afternoon but no one around here offers it for less than £500 which is pretty prohibitive for us.

I do realise that my odds are still v favourable but still feel a bit anxious.

Harmony doesn't work on twin pregnancies anyways, but you could always have CVS or amnio

Roonerspism · 29/03/2015 07:59

Sorry and stop blaming yourself Flowers

I would go with the private scan result and stop worrying (easier said than done!)

Did they take bloods? Or was the NHS result based on scan and age only?

FWIW I just had my third baby at 39. I just had a private nuchal scan that said it looked ok - I didn't want the number - and that was it.... Had my 20 week scan as usual.

Pizdets · 29/03/2015 08:06

Where did you have your private scan? I will have both for this current pregnancy and I had both for DS 2 years go as well. The nhs risk was lower (but 100k vs 10k) but the nuchal was higher, which was what stressed us out. Like you, we couldn't miss the opportunity to get different opinions and it did freak me out for a while. Think you just have to decide how much you trust the private clinic, if it's somewhere which specialises in screening (like the fetal medical centre) then I would be inclined to take their odds to be honest!

mamapants · 29/03/2015 08:11

But the NHS result is very low risk too. I get that you are worried for other reasons but neither result shows any reason to worry.

Boomf · 29/03/2015 08:17

The NHS result is extremely low risk, all is fine. Re this issue you have no worries so your high anxiety is something in itself

Taranta · 29/03/2015 08:36

Hello OMG try not to stress too much about this - last week I had a private scan at the FMC, then a CVS when I got a high risk result (thankfully clear of major abnormalities). And tomorrow I have my NHS scan - I also had a vanishing twin so I'm taking lots of info to my appointment tomorrow so I'll just pass all my information, scan results etc on, and see what they say. But I don't regret having the earlier scan and I'm pleased to have the opportunity to see my remaining twin in scan again x

Cornberry · 29/03/2015 11:03

Given the range of results you can get they don't actually seem all that far apart to me... Try not to worry x

OMGBabyNo3 · 29/03/2015 17:40

Thank you all for replying. I'm going to try and be realistic that everything will be just fine and put it all out my head x

I know it's hard but try not to worry. I also had two nuchal tests and two 12 week scans. It was becausewe paid for a package at the FMC that included both the harmony and nuchal.

I ended up with two different nuchal results. The private one was 1:2000 and the NHS one was 1:1400.

In my experience the private scan looked at a lot more physical markers during the scan so that's what I put it down to.

Good luck with your pregnancy and don't feel bad about having two scans. Ifelt guilty about it but I'm also 39 and had many years of infertility and miscarriage before this bean stuck. We decided to do all we could to get all the information available so I could feel as confident as possible about the pregnancy.
