Short cervix and pregnant again

I had a short cervix 1.5cm at 20 weeks with my daughter. Spent 13 weeks in hospital on bedrest. Came off bedrest at 32 weeks and went full term. I'm pregnant again and have been offered a suture at 12-14 weeks or can wait and see. Anyone else been given a choice about this and did you have a suture? Really don't want to spend 3 months in hospital again.

Hi dewdrop it stands for premature rupture of membranes, at full term its just prom :)

kirstylouise20 · 16/04/2015 11:22

Hi just thought I would update, had my 2nd cervix scan yesterday by a really good consultant & I'm measuring 29.6mm not 26mm so bit bigger, he says it is perfectly normal long & closed with no funneling & that they only done it for my peace of mind as they had no concerns whatsoever & I was told to stay off google! So I suppose its not just length that really matters as if I type my length in to google it comes up short but that's 2 different consultants with no concerns at all & this is my 4th so maybe your cervix changes slightly the more you have? Anyway I'm just gona enjoy this now and stop worrying as he said stress is bad for bubba, I'm now 22 weeks but I cant wait to be 28 weeks I'll feel much safer then

applecore0317 · 16/04/2015 11:36

Great news kirsty

I was signed back to the midwife yesterday, 34 weeks, no more internal scans, can stop the progesterone at 36 weeks and enjoy the rest of my pregnancy :)

willnotbetamed · 16/04/2015 12:06

Good news all round today! I also had appointment yesterday - cervix at 24 weeks still showing no signs of shortening or funnelling, in fact it was 4cm, compared with 3.5cm two weeks ago, so better than expected. Baby is lying transverse at the moment, and I think that must be helping - the other two were always head down and pushing on the cervix from early on, but then I was pretty active in both those pregnancies.

Quite a bit still to go, so not out of the woods yet, but today I'm feeling optimistic that I might actually escape bed rest, hospital, steroids, premature birth, etc.this time round!

Congratulations both Kirsty and applecore on your positive news - hang on in there. Any news from Littlebairn yet?

applecore0317 · 16/04/2015 12:12

Ah that's great willnot hope it stays like that for you, sounds very positive, it was at your stage that mine had started to really shorten so that's great that yours is longer :) and Yey for 24 weeks :)

Hope all went well litlebairn

LittleBairn · 17/04/2015 02:56

Just to let you all know DD was born on Monday night she's perfect a little Jaundice so we have only just gotten out the hospital but need to go back for more blood tests.

It really has been amazing to finally have our own family. I almost gave up hope at one point but if I can get a successful outcome even with my history I don't see why many more women can't either hopefully threads like this on MN will help inform women better.

willnot brilliant news! At your stage I was only 1.4 with a head down baby hopefully baby will stay transverse.

kirsty I remember that long wait till the magic 28 weeks. Keeping busy helps, I hope your time flies by.

applecore0317 · 17/04/2015 05:42

Congratulations littlebairn! What wonderful wonderful news. Hope the birth was ok in the end. I'm so pleased for you that all your patience and endurance have paid off at last. Enjoy the first magic days at home as a family!

April1984 · 19/04/2015 15:06

Hi all congratulations littlebairn!

I will be having my stitch on Thursday , actually looking forward to it as it feels like a big milestone. When did you ladies with stitches get advised to have the stitch removed? My doc is recommending 37.5 weeks.

kirstylouise20 · 19/04/2015 22:29

Thanks everyone & so happy for everyone's good news long may it continue ?? and congratulations littlebairn hope all went well

LittleBairn · 23/04/2015 12:37

April my stitch was taken out at 36 weeks exactly then I was induced and delivered at 39+1.

April1984 · 23/04/2015 12:59

Thanks LittleBairn. Just sat in hospital post stitch! Can't belive it's now done. Waiting for doc to tell me how well it went and also to hear baby's heartbeat which I'm very anxious for. Having quite a bit of bleeding but nurses don't seem too concerned. It's so horrible seeing blood there when pregnant! X

willnotbetamed · 23/04/2015 13:15

Fingers crossed for you April! I hope you hear the heartbeat loud and clear and that after this you can relax a bit for the rest of the pregnancy (none of us here will ever be completely relaxed, but the stitch will hopefully give some peace of mind).

April1984 · 23/04/2015 13:42

Thanks willnotbetamed doc just been and we saw the heartbeat so that's great. He was a bit rushed which was annoying but he said it all went well. I feel like I want full details of exactly where on my cervix the placed the stitch, even though I know he will have placed it as high as he could X

applecore0317 · 23/04/2015 14:07

Glad it's all done April and that you have seen the heartbeat, hope you will be getting lots of rest

Thanks both, yes resting up now x

LittleBairn · 23/04/2015 18:00

April yes blood is scary hopefully its calmed down. Hopefully at next appointment you can get more details, they can be a bit sparing with them at times.

overstretched101 · 26/04/2015 20:19

Hi, I was directed to this thread by another mumsnetter. I have recently come home from hospital, on bed rest but home now. I am 22 weeks 5 days and went in with strong b hicks. Upon checking it turns out my cervix is 1cm and soft... Dr was not supportive at all - basically told me if baby is born there is nothing they can do. This will be baby number three, my others went full term no problems. they won't offer a stitch as apparently my cervix is too close to the neck of the womb and there is a risk it could rupture my membranes.

Anyone experienced similar? Should I push for more? I'm still a total nervous wreck!

Thanks in advance

overstretched was it a consultant who said that to you? Personally I would request a second opinion. Was there any funnelling? My consultant told me that if I did need a stitch they would keep me in hospital so that I could be monitored due to my waters possibly being aggravated, as had already had a leak from my hind waters. I didn't need the stitch in the end though and was put on progesterone pessaries to lenghthen my cervix or stop it shortening further

overstretched101 · 26/04/2015 21:23

Hello Dixienormas and Applecore,

Thanks for your responses, yes it was a consultant, that was after 24 hrs monitoring. I have been sent home but go in for another check up Thursday. I've not been offered progesterone or anything and as I've never been here before I'm not sure what I should be asking for.

No one mentioned funnelling so I presume not?

applecore0317 · 26/04/2015 22:32

It should say in your notes. Funneling would indicate that the cervix is opened. If still shut then that's a positive.

I would ask about progesterone when you go on Thursday.
