Has anyone else bought a Doppler and heard a heartbeat this early, I'm so reassured after a miscarriage. Smile

Are you sure its not your hb you're listening to? Or the placenta? It's very unlikely to get foetal sounds at 9 weeks on a non-medical grade doppler.

TheSingingMonkey · 27/03/2015 15:01

It would be very unlikely, the baby is the size of an olive. Even midwives don't start trying until 16 weeks and some not even until 20+.

Schoolaroundthecorner · 27/03/2015 15:22

I also don't think it's the heartbeat OP. Sorry to say it as I've had a miscarriage myself so I completely understand the nervousness etc. I think you'd have to wait until past 16 weeks for them to be really reliable. Baby's heartbeat would sound like galloping horses, really fast, much faster than your own heartbeat or placental blood flow.

TheSingingMonkey · 27/03/2015 15:29

And don't forget your own heartbeat makes two noises as it contracts and relaxes, which counts as one beat. So it may be you're counting 140 beats for example when actually it would only be 70. Plus you hear other movements and placental flow.

Notamumyet81 · 27/03/2015 15:53

I heard the heartbeat on angelsounds at 10 weeks and it definitely wasn't my own heartbeat as was about 170 beats per minute and wasn't placenta as that's a totally different noise (a whooshing whereas the heartbeat is like a chugging train). So it's definitely possible. I listened again weekly and have since heard heartbeat at 16 week midwife appointment & it's the same (though now 150 beats per min) so know what I was hearing from the start was the heartbeat. Having said that I know it can be hard to find - it took me a few attempts first time and some people may be listening to their own heartbeat, just count for ten seconds against a stopwatch and you'll soon see. I think it helps that I am/was skinny. Was also able to see a heartbeat on abdominal ultrasound with empty bladder (they made me empty it as was too full) at 6 weeks and 2 days, but I know plenty others on here have needed internal dildo-can to see anything at that stage. So it's different for different people but definitely possible in my experience x

Notamumyet81 · 27/03/2015 15:56

Ps - when I was listening to the heartbeat early I'd have to have the angelsounds v low down on my tummy, like just below the hairline. It's just above now. Midwife warned me at 16 week appointment that might not be able to hear the heartbeat but then found it instantly in same spot that I do

Methe · 27/03/2015 15:57

It's quite easy to differentiate between foetal and maternal HB Hmm

I had a dopplar and through several pregnancies and always heard the HB by 9w.

FernGullysWoollyPully · 27/03/2015 15:59

I heard little dd during my last pregnancy at 10 weeks with a hi bebe fetal doppler. This pregnancy is totally different, I'm 13 weeks today and thought i heard it for a nano second yesterday but then baby must have moved and I couldn't find it again. It's definitely possible though.

0ddsocks · 27/03/2015 16:02

It is possible, I got a hb at 10-11 weeks with an Angelcare Doppler in both pregnancies

GingerCuddleMonster · 27/03/2015 16:11

9 weeks is sorta doable if you really know what your looking for but 16weks plus is better. I could never really get it, even at like 18weeks, he kept moving all I'd get is chugga-chugga-chugga (blob) wosh-wosh

the bigger kept moving around, gave up. Then scan confirmed anterior placenta so just used to hear the whooshing and felt hardly any movement.

My auntie is a midwife and we've been for a cup of tea at her house, it most definately is my babies heartbeat Grin

Thanks for all the advice :)

That is great.

I always say this on these threads, and I hope I don't sound a misery, but remember they are a bit of fun. They can be great at this stage when you aren't getting other signs from the baby (though don't panic if one day you get nothing. A tiny bean can just be in the wrong position), but later in pregnancy you do have to be careful that you don't take false reassurance from them. Heartbeat is a very late distress sign and no one other than a trained professional knows properly how to interpret accelerations/decelerations etc. Just a reminder to people out there (especially lurkers) that movement is the most important thing and never base a decision on whether to go to hospital on what you're getting from a home Doppler.

Northernlurker · 27/03/2015 17:33

These threads are always full of people who 'definately' heard the Hb early at home. All I would say is I take that with a very big pinch of salt and agree with pp that this should never be relied on in late pregnancy.
Good luck OP - hope everything goes very smoothly for you.

MorgansMummy24 · 27/03/2015 17:46

Yes my auntie has actually just told me off for buying one (hehe) I couldn't resist but I won't be using it foolishly! Thanks for advice everyone SmileFlowers

Great advice Penguins. The heart is the last to go. I know from experience.

cathpip · 27/03/2015 19:50

With my first dc 6 years ago the midwife at my booking appointment found the heartbeat, I was 9+4 weeks by my lmp date, so it can happen.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 28/03/2015 16:11

So sorry for your loss Flambola Thanks

heatherxo · 30/03/2015 19:06

I bought the Angel Sounds Doppler too after I lost one of my twins. Very reliable, heard heartbeat so clearly! So reassuring in the early stages:)

MorgansMummy24 · 30/03/2015 20:26

I think so too Heather, I bought mine off amazon for £20 and I'm more than happy that it's money well spent, after a delayed miscarriage which was found at my 12 week scan I just wanted some reassurance like you say, I wasnt going to be too concerned if I couldn't pick a heartbeat up as I'm only 10 weeks now but the fact that I can already has just taken a weight off my mind, obviously there's still plenty to worry about but if you can have that little bit of reassurance it's drfinately worth the £20 Grin

Definitely morgansmummy! I paid £22, and that's nothing compared to knowing your babies tiny heart is still beating Smile
