Financial Stability

I'm 7 weeks and having a bit of a freak out Grin

DH and I aren't particularly financially stable. Getting pregnant came as a bit of a surprise as we've been trying for a long time but Ive got PCOS so it was always going to take a while.
Last summer DH quit his well paid job to go freelance and in the hope that another full time job would come up. His full time job was making him incredibly unhappy and miserable. Whilst going freelance, a few companies shafted him and we are owed quite a bit of money from a company who went bankrupt - so we won't see this for a long time! He also was struggling with credit card repayments so we approached the debt charity to help us out. This has helped no end although obviously destroyed his credit score.

My situation is that im about to lose my full time job - Ive only been employed for as long as the show (I work in theatre) lasts. I have freelance work to go back to which is fine, but I lose any maternity from the company. I will only get SMP which isn't a great deal.

Now, I also have 1 and a half horses and 2 dogs. The half horse is a shared ownership between myself and a friend. We haven't had him long and im panicking that I can't afford him. Ive aired my financial worries with my friend but she doesn't seem to listen. My 1 horse and my dogs are my priority over the half horse when the baby comes along.

Argh! Help! Is everyone financially stable with their kids? Or before they had kids? We also rent our house - it's 3 bedrooms, near a station and near amazing dog walking so we're a bit hesitant to move right now :( our landlords are also really lovely and haven't put our rent up since we've moved her which is nearly 3 years now.

Thanks for reading xx

Hi there,

New here and saw your post and it massively resonated. I'm 8.5 weeks, due on Halloween (not sure if that's a good thing!) and husband and I are both self employed, with 2 dogs and 2 horses!

The 1 horse will be off to a new home but the other is just a baby and long term prospect at an amazing yard so I'm trying to think of ways to afford the schooling livery when baby arrives and whether I can even justify it as won't be riding.

I'm so sad about maybe not being able to take a 'proper' maternity leave like my employed friends do, even though it's my choice. I will also be out of a job in June and need to find a new one before I have a bump and the only option we have is to remortgage which is not a dead cert.

Anyway, I don't have a solution for you I'm afraid but just wanted to say that I completely understand and you are not alone by any means. Good luck over the next few months, my Mum always says everything happens for a reason so perhaps it's just not obvious what that is yet Smile

Take care xx

Oh lil nope i am not completely financially stable!! I am a mature student so left a full time job to go study. In my final year and baby is due in 8 weeks so i will be finishing all my uni work asap so i can graduate this year. So i will be getting no SMP or maternity allowance.

Partner is self employed and works from home, which is great in terms of when the baby is here as he will be able to help so much, but he isn't earning bucket loads.

We rent and have a dog but we do have around £33k savings for a mortgage for the future so we are automatically disqualified from some financial help.
I met with citizens advice yesterday and i have found i am entitles to the standard child benefit of £20 a week and then i can also claim child tax credits of £60 a week which is great! I just wanted to take some pressure off my partner paying for everything! So i can chip in with nappies food and stuff now!

If you are concerned definitely speak to someone at citizens advice they are fab! :D

Thank you for your replies.
What a crazy emotional rollarcoaster we're all on!
I will have a chat with CAB - I hadn't thought of that. Also HMRC should have some info about money im allowed, right?

I know that it'll work itself out, right? It has to, doesn't it?! I just feel like Ive made my life quite difficult by having the horses and dogs.
My big dog took down a sheep today. I was mortified. According to our (amazingly incredible) farmer, the sheep was fine, just a sore ear... But it now means I can no longer walk the dogs at the yard and cut my work load down considerably.

The yard is a private one with no one on site to do any assistance if I need help last minute but thankfully my friend is very supportive so she knows full well that she'll need to step up and do more morning stuff. Thankfully my gorgeous lad can live out come summer as baby is due in
November.

leanne a Halloween baby would be awesomeGrin your positivity is fab. I need to take a leaf out of your book!!
Xx
