I've never been one to weight myself, pre pregnancy I've always been slim/average build. my first midwife appointment my weight was 63kg I'm now just 28 weeks pregnant and thought tonight I'd pop on the scales and check how much I've gained... 12kg!! When I look on websites that's the maximum on the recommended weight gain and Im not even in the third trimester!!! Am I really unhealthy??? I feel so worried as I do feel more hungry and I am eating more than before I was pregnant... Should I start cutting down?

It depends on what you're eating as opposed to how much. For example - I have terrible all day nausea at the moment which only stops if I eat or sleep. I really want to sit and eat laughing cow triangles with salt and vinegar crisps. All day. But instead, I eat crudités - peppers, cucumbers, carrots etc. if anything sweet is needed it'll be grapes and clementines rather than chocolate etc.

I wouldn't worry, some people put on very little others like me put on tonnes. I am on pregnancy no 4 and pre pregnancy weigh 63kg, I don't eat any more than usual but I always gain about 5 stone every time :(. I'm not that bothered neither is the midwife, i have large babies and the weight does come off!!

Speak to your midwife if you are concerned but everyone is different as cathpip says so try not to panic!

I haven't weighed myself since I got pregnant as I think it adds pressure to an already anxious time... Plus I am OK with the changes to my body at the moment and if it turns out I've put on tonnes, I'll go on a diet!

Pregnancy can be hideous as we know - don't make it more hideous by being hard on yourself, stressing out about weight gain /loss and denying yourself treats every now and then.

Hope you feel better. Brew

I guess we're all different! I'd rather keep an eye on my weight/size now so that I don't habe to worry about it when dc arrives. I'm also very aware of what I'm feeding myself, therefore my baby.

hippymama1 · 25/03/2015 16:55

Don't get me wrong Stinkersmum I am not advocating chips for 3 meals a day and big chocolate binges! I am sure we are all very aware of what we are feeding ourselves and our babies, I guess we just have different methods to get to the same result of a healthy baby.

I am also jealous of your ability to eat crudites when you have nausea - the only thing I could eat was french bread, cream crackers and pop chips! I did eat loads of fruit in that time though - only if it was straight from the fridge though and freezing cold. Odd isn't it?! Smile

Don't panic - I gained a 1lb a week in my first pg from a similar starting point as you. I gained a lot of fluid and had lost 2 stone within a week of birth (oh, the night sweats). Within 12 months I was a stone lighter than pre-pg thanks to low carbing and a boob monster.

Now pg again and after a good start (with nausea and vomiting this time) I seem to have put on 5kg in 5 weeks between appointments. Horrifying. And I have still been doing intense cardio at least twice a week and have been snacking only on fruit and crackers. I have accepted that I am destined to be a blimpy pregnant lady.

Stinkersmum · 25/03/2015 17:06

hippymama1 cold fruit is the best - currently eating refrigerated clementines and frozen grapes.

hippymama1 · 25/03/2015 17:16

stinkersmum Totally - the cold grapes are amazing!

You have got to try fridged pineapple, blueberries and raspberries too if they are your thing... I am still on that little combination now at 6 months!

Stinkersmum · 25/03/2015 17:43

Pineapple - ate a whole tin + juice the other week. Not recommended unless you're constipated iyswim....Blush blueberries and raspberries I love but living in KSA they're imported and ridiculously expensive.

Carrierpenguin · 25/03/2015 17:50

Don't worry too much - I gained the same as you in my first pregnancy (and more in my second pregnancy...) but I lost it all after the birth due to breastfeeding a hungry baby and going for lots of walks with the pram as that's how my baby liked to sleep Grin

Thanks everyone for your advice. I think a bit more swimming and a few less Easter eggs will make me feel better! I'll try cold grapes when I'm having a sugar craving thanks Stinkersmum! I think the problem is no one tells you when your pregnant that you are the 'right size' I seem to either hear I look neat or petite or WOW you are huge are you sure you're only 7months???? It doesn't help with confidence...
