So, um, my boobs are leaking... but I don't think I'm pregnant.

Hi everyone. I wasn't sure where to put this to be honest, but considering it's a boob issue I thought it was best in here? Possibly?

Anyway, for the past week both my boobs have been leaking a tiny amount of milk... but it's highly unlikely i'm pregnant. (Had sex on the 6th of march, about 3 days after my period ended. Which would make me 3 weeks pregnant when I started leaking and 4 weeks now?). But considering it was so soon after my period it doesn't seem likely to be pregnancy, and is it possible to leak so soon anyway? I took a test a couple of days ago and it was negative.

I stopped breastfeeding my youngest about a year and a half to two years ago.

Is there anything else it could be? I'm very confused and it's really strange. I'd go to the doctors but unfortunately my partner works on an oil rig and so i'd have to bring my children in with me, and it's not a discussion i fancy having in front of my kids!

ANY help or suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

First you need to rule out pregnancy.

I had this many years ago and saw my GP who referred me to the breast clinic. Were they took swabs and also did an ultrasound of my breasts to rule out anything sinister. It is important to see your GP about this issue. There was actually no reason why it started with me but it seemed to end just as suddenly a couple of months later.

Are you on any medication? Years ago I lactated when on prescription meds. Weird side effect maybe?

halestone - I can't fully rule out pregnancy for another couple of days, but my periods can be a little scattered at times anyway. I'll definitely be taking another test. I just think it's unlikely i'm pregnant but my boobs seem to be disagreeing.

WilsonWilsonWoman - I'm not on any medication at all. I have been drinking teapigs for the last couple of weeks though (liquorice + peppermint and green tea mostly). Other than that I'm pretty sure my diet is the same as it's always been.

A number of years ago I had elevated prolactin levels and had to have a barrage of hormone tests.

One of the questions the GP asked me was if I was lactating! I wasn't Smile

I'd suggest a pregnancy test first of all and if it's negative then maybe a trip to GP for blood tests?

Good luck.

Number3cometome · 24/03/2015 14:59

Prolactin - has happened to me before.

Get to the docs and have a blood test done. It's quite important.

I would not think you would be lactating if you are not in established pregnancy, so i'd rule out the prolactin for sure.

OP, I would get this checked. An ultrasound and/or mammogram would clarify this.

TheSingingMonkey · 24/03/2015 19:57

Definitely prolactin. It's a hormone that causes us to produce breast milk. So if your levels are raised then you'll lactate. Go to your GP, all you'll need is a blood test to find out, and go from there.

Another vote for prolactin needs checking. I have very high levels and take medication to reduce it. I have never breastfed either of my dc and my youngest is now 2.9 but if I squeeze my breasts I still produce milk. (My levels are exceptionally high, most people's about 250 and mine are 4000+). It's not dangerous, just one of those odd things! If you try to conceive it can cause problems with ovulation but the medication they can give you can bring your levels back down and so ovulation returns to normal.
