Anyone taking Labetalol (side-effects)

A few days ago I was put on 200mg twice a day for high BP. It didn't seem to be doing the trick so they've upped it to 200mg three times a day.

Today I am feeling dizzy and nauseas and for the first time ever in my life I have a nose bleed. Presuming these are side-effects and wondering if anyone else taking it and having any side-effects and is it controlling your BP?

I'm not sure that those are side effects, could it be that your blood pressure is poorly controlled still? I think you should seek medical advice. For what it's worth I took labetalol with no adverse side effects.

I took it for a few weeks post partum and had dizziness/feeling faint when the dose was too high (made my BP too low).

See your doctor again but obv don't change the dose unless they tell you to.

I was on it postpartum as well, and it made me extremely dizzy, even once I was phased down to a low dosage. My GP told me it's a fairly common side effect, but I'd still go get checked out to make sure you're on the right dose.

Thanks ladies. I called up for advice and was told yes this can happen. Having a check this afternoon to see how the bp is doing and meantime having a lie down to hopefully shake the dizziness.

How many weeks are you? Was you on methyldopa? I am surprised they have gone straight for labetalol. See if you can switch?

Syd35 · 24/03/2015 11:58

Hi Number3 I am just over 30 weeks. BP just started rising in the last few days so Labetalol is the first thing they have tried me with. I will ask about alternatives if I continue to feel rubbish.

Are you on Methyldopa?

Yes, usually I take bisoprolol when not pregnant which is a beta blocker.

In my previous pregnancy I was started on methyldopa then labetalol was also introduced when the BP was not staying under control.

I suspect the same will happen this time (eclampsia in first pregnancy, pre eclampsia in second)

I am 23+2 at the moment and so far doing well!

geekymommy · 24/03/2015 13:21

I had some dizziness, but the biggest side effect I had was a positive one. I find the labetalol helps my anxiety, more than the bisoprolol I was on before I was pregnant. So I stayed on it after I had DD.

Number3cometome · 24/03/2015 13:52

Oh really geeky, wasn't aware of that.

Labetalol is an alpha and beta blocker I think, and bisoprolol is just a beta blocker.

I find that bisoprolol controls my heart a lot better, but I get terrible Raynaulds with it.

Not sure what I will do when b/feeding as bisoprolol is still a no no.

Good to hear all is going well Number3 sounds like you've been through a rough time previously you are brave going for it again : )

Interesting Geeky

Syd new partner too! I am all about the danger Wink

On a serious note, I think the lack of stress certainly is helping!

Syd35 · 24/03/2015 15:59

Haha Number3 I like your sense of humour.

Funny you mention the new partner thing as I have been asked that twice this week. Same daddy for both mine. Were your first two with the same dad?

OP posts:
Number3cometome · 24/03/2015 16:18

Yes first two with the same dad arsehole

Apparently the risk of pre-eclampsia is higher with a new partner, although I'd say my risks are reduced with the lack of stress!

My consultant said they have to treat it like a first child, so the chances of it being severe again are much higher (apparently it gets less severe with each pregnancy with the same partner)
Although again it is all statistics and no one actually knows why it happens.

I'm a planned ELCS again this time so hopefully will fly under the evil eclampsia radar!

I found when I was on labetelol that I bled a lot more easily. I had nose bleeds and small scratches that bled at lot.
