Hi

I got pregnant first time through ICSI at a private clinic. With the clinic I had a scan at 7 weeks and saw/heard the heartbeat and then a 10 week scan which again was all good. I was then discharged from the clinic.

I have my first appointment with the GP tomorrow (I am 12 weeks today) and have been wondering how long it will be until I get a scan on the NHS because I have already has two scans with the clinic?

We really want to announce our wonderful news now but I would really like another scan to just make sure. even though only a couple of weeks ago I saw my baby bouncing around you still worry!

Any advice, stories, experiences similar to mine would be appreciated!

Umm why didn't you see/ call your gp earlier ? You'll get the scan when the local service can fit you in and I'm afraid lots of slots will be filled by people who got into the system earlier than you. You could be lucky and be in this week, but locally I'm afraid you'd wait a could of weeks and might even not get into the nearest maternity unit as they could be full for you dates.

Having given you all the limitations of a cash and facility strapped NHS congrats on the pregnancy and hope all goes very normally from now on. Having had 2 good private scans I'd get on and tell people :)

If you

I called after my 7 week scan and it was the first appointment I could get, great the NHS isn't it! Also I wasn't too worried at I was still with the private clinic and having two scans with them.

From what you have said it looks like I will just have to wait and see what the outcome is tomorrow after seeing my gp.

No I have been with my clinic until my 10 week scan when I was then discharged.

The first available appointment with my surgery was tomorrow.

When I spoke to my consultant about this she said it would be fine for my to see my GP when I was 12 weeks.

I am starting to panic now!

Depends where you are but some hospitals allow you to self refer-mine did (I was with the nhs arm of a private service but only was under their care until about 8 weeks when they sent me upstairs to fill in the sf referral form). Might be worth looking online or calling their antenatal number and asking. It may only put you a day ahead of what the GP will do tomorrow but it's something you can do today to ease your panic ??

And congratulations.

Thanks for all your advice girls :) I have had a quick google and there are a few sites where people have not seen a gp/midwife until 10-12 weeks so I think all should be well tomorrow.

Might all be a bit different as it is an IVF baby.

Thanks again and 2015 I will def have a look online as you suggested x

I'm sure you're aware of this, but if you want the nuchal fold scan it will have to be carried out by the time you're 13 weeks + 6. If you can't get a scan within this timeframe, and you want an NT reading, you may have to think about a private scan.

anroga · 23/03/2015 11:42

Ok thanks for the advice jeee will discuss tomorrow with GP, if it cannot be arranged within the next two weeks I will just have to pay.

On top of what IVF has cost us already (due to my husband having two children from a previous marriage we were not eligible for any help from the NHS) whats a couple more hundred quid!

Did you tell the receptionist why you wanted to see the GP? I only ask as in many areas you don't see a GP you self refer to the midwife team who book scans and refer you to consultants etc. if you didn't mention it perhaps call the surgery and double check the procedure?

Congratulations, we announced after a ten week scan as we were told this was as "safe" as 12 weeks in terms of chsnce of loss. Hopefully everything will slot in perfectly and our doom is unfounded! Shame the system isn't standardised nationally for referring.

Yes whatabout when I called I told them it was because I was pregnant through first time IVF/ICSI and they had all the letters there from my fertility clinic ready for the GP. Perhaps that is why I am seeing a GP rather than a midwife for my first appointment.

I did call again last week to check that all the letters where with my GP now ready for tomorrows appointment and they confirmed that they were.

Glad to read you felt confident enough to announce after your 10 week scan (I thought the same that there can't be much difference between the 10 and 12 weeks) plus today I have made it to 12 weeks touch wood with no problems.

Did you get pregnant too through IVF?

All went well this morning with GP, had to ring a midwife and do a self refferal because I am 12 weeks to get the ball rolling for this nuchal scan before 14 weeks.

Will get two letters shortly for my booking in appointment with a midwife and an appointment for the nuchal scan.

Feel much more relieved now :)

Thanks again for all your advice.

Ps - Am obviously not having a 12 week scan as the next one will be the nuchal scan probably next week does anyone else think we should announce our pregnancy now I am 12 weeks and after having a 10 week scan?

I had a 10 week scan and then a 13 week. I asked my dr, and she said that basically if they see / hear a heartbeat at the 10 week and everything is progressing as expected, there's no reason not to tell people after the 10 week. I think 12 is the usual as that's when most peoples' first proper scan happens

NickyEds · 24/03/2015 15:01

I suppose it depends on if you're having the Downs screening alongside the nt reading on if you want to tell people or not. Some people like to wait until the screening comes back, others don't mind. Really chase up the scan if you don't get a referral in the next couple of days. I was messed around with appointments and didn't get scanned until 13+4 days (although we were less certain of dates than you'll be!!) and the baby wasn't playing ball at all and they couldn't do the nt. Normally they would have you back and re scan but as it feel on a Friday a later scan wasn't possible and I had to have the quad test at 15 weeks. Everything was fine but it was stressful.

anroga · 25/03/2015 09:18

Thats what I thought Missmilla1 about the 10 week scan - we annouced last night which was lovely, it feels more real now!

Thanks for your advice NickyEds I have already thought that I know what the NHS can be like and I do not want it to be too late for me to have the test for down sydrome. Glad to read everything was fine in the end though.

Thanks again for your advice NickyEs its only down to mny pestering that I am seeing a midwife for my booking in appointment on Wednesday and my Nuchal scan and screening on the 7th (I am 13 weeks todday).

I feel that if I had left it to them I would of missed my slot!
