Recommendations to soothe a cold

I've been suffering with a stinking cold for a few days, terrible blocked sinuses and hacking cough, I'm going to see the docs hopefully tomorrow to check it's not anything serious but does anyone have any recommendations to things to soothe my cough. I have been taking honey and lemon and steaming but willing to try anything at their point. Worse bit is I can't taste anything and have no appetite so forcing myself to keep eating is hard

Whittlefish I've just got over a horrible cold and was amazed at how many cold remedies are 'banned' when you're pregnant! I sucked on mints which went a little way to clearing my nose and holding off the coughing. A friend of mine who gets coughs all the time chews chewing gum to soothe her throat. Hot milk with a spoonful of honey mixed in is also a nice soother - as are ice lollies. Hope you're feeling better soon! Flowers

Hi Whittlefish, I had an absolutely horrendous cold this week (I already suffer terribly with my sinuses). Honey and lemon was my SAVIOUR!!
I chilled out in bed or on the couch and drank endless mugs of the stuff and it worked.
Hopefully you feel better soon.

Thanks guys I think it's just waiting it out. So funny normally if I get a cold it's come and completely gone In 4 days max, but this has totally knocked me for six

Jakeman's honey and lemon menthol sweets - soothe the throat and help with stuffiness. It's what the pharmacist recommended for me and they are really good! Unfortunately, with your immune system suppressed, all you can do really is wait it out. Hope you feel better soon!

There's a benylin that's in a purple box that's ok during pregnancy - I thinks it's basically liquid sugar. It'll help soothe it if it's a tickly cough but won't help if you're coughing up gunk.

Vaporub's ok too.

Urgh poor you - the pharmacist told me that when she tells some pregnant women they can't have anything, they burst into tears!

I found running the shower super hot and then sitting in the steam for 10 mins helped massively, as did chewing air waves gum, you could try those too! X

I had a horrendous cold about 34 weeks and felt awful. Needed a good five days bed rest. I also spent a lot of time under a hot shower. Sounds disgusting but try coughing up what you can whilst you have th hot wat running against your chest or the top of your back. Poor thing, I feel for you.

I have had this all week. Already breathless at 22 weeks, but so stuffed up I was struggling to breathe which brought on panic attacks. It has been HELL!!! As you say pharmacy won't let you have anything. I used menthol sweets, vapour rub (including in a bowl of steaming hot water - put head over), olbas oil on scarf, propped up pillows to sleep, paracetamol. I finally got doc appt and prescribed me some sort of sudafed which is okay in pregnancy which has been lifesaver. Oh and lots of sleep and rest in day

Those nasal strips that you put across the top of your nose help with a blocked nose when you are trying to sleep

One of the very effective natural remedies (tried and proven many times) is a hot tea with squeezed slice of lemon, bit of honey and loads of fresh crushed raspberries (crush them inside the tea until they become mushy), drink the whole thing, then eat the remaining raspberries and the slice of lemon too. Drink it before going to bed, it makes you sweat out the cold, you'll feel much better next morning.

Haha scarednoob I was one of those pregnant women in the pharmacy! 38 weeks and in tears because I couldn't have a lemsip!
All suggestions are good here, and also drink ALOT of water! I know you probably need to wee a lot already, but it's amazing how much better drinking water alone can make you feel. Oh, and pamper yourself! Flowers
