Will I be high risk?

Hello all,

When I had my son I was induced at 12 days overdue and had my son when I was 14 days overdue. In the end I was induced by the drip. To cut a long story short I got a temperature, they were unable to detect my sons heartbeat so I was cut and a ventouse was used. My son was born with the cord around his neck and he had pooed inside. It had also been over 24 hours that my waters had broken. He was rushed off to special care and was put on antibiotics. I then immediately haemorrhaged losing 1200ml so I had to have a blood transfusion. My son and I stayed in hospital for 4 days.

We soon forgot about the traumatic time as oh my aren't they so worth it! A few years on my husband and I are now thinking about having our second child. I just wondered, will I be classed as moderate or high risk pregnancy this time? My pregnancy with my son was really good, no problems. It all just went crazy when he entered the world! I was planning on a water birth with my son but obviously didn't and I know it is not important, as long as baby is ok. But I just wondered whether I will be able to have it on my birth plan this time round as I know you only can if you are classed as low risk.

Thank you all in advance! Xxx

Hi there, sounds like you had a pretty traumatic time of DS1, but I can't see anything that sounds like anything other than a one off, unless you bled due to a condition that's likely to repeat itself? I'm no medical expert whatsoever, but I think what happened to you has no reason to occur again.

I've had 2 previous pregnancies, both c-sections - pre-eclampsia with my first and placenta previa with my second - and I'm really looking forward to talking this all through with the consultant and trying for a vba2c this time. Working out the risks isn't easy but I think you seem to be in a good position for an easier birth this time around, good luck.

Thank you so much!

That's what I think too. Like with the PPH they I had, that can happen due to so many different reasons. I had a good pregnancy, only a few blood tests coming back as low iron levels.

Good luck and best wishes with your next pregnancy and birth! Xxx

I didn't have PPH but DS1 was also induced, ventouse and had to be resuscitated at birth. I was not classed as high risk for DS2 and had a textbook perfect active birth; no drugs, no interventions and much less stressful!

That's great to hear, thank you so much! Xxx

The only thing that would likely be highlighted is the significant PPH - that may well mean they don't recommend a home birth, and they will probably want you to have an IV line in 'just in case'. Discuss with your MW (once you get there!), you may find they are quite amenable...

Thank you! Yes definitely no home birth for me! Thank goodness I didn't with my son as I did consider it for a long time. My story would be very different if I had. Xxx

I had v similar. 12 days overdue induced- 3 days of induction leading to epidiotomy , forcep delivery and PPH. I am now 39 weeks with my second and have not been classed as high risk. I've been low risk again- however......
I did have to be referred to a consultant due to the PPH and in the third stage of labour i need to be managed ( ie a drip to contract my uterus to prevent another PPH). That just means I can't have home birth ( why would I want to?!) , water birth or anything like that as I have to have a canular in.

Hoping this labour is nothing like the first- will find out in a few weeks! ( I'm desperately hoping not to be induced again but time is tickig away!)
Good luck!

Thank you so much for your reply!

Sounds like we had pretty identical birth experiences!

That's helpful for me to know about you seeing a consultant due to the PPH as I did wonder if they would do that and I would feel happy to have the opportunity to ask questions ect.

Wishing you all the best for a smoother birth this time around! Xxx
