High White Blood Cell Count. What could be the reason?

Went for my booking appointment on wed, had the routine blood tests, got a call from the Dr's on Friday to say the white blood cell count had come back elevated indicating infection.
They asked if I've had any symptoms of an infection, pain, swelling, high temp etc but I've been fine.
Any idea what could cause this?

TIA

It's likely to be an infection. It can be easy to miss some of the symptoms in pregnancy e.g. weeing a lot, feeling hot. Did they give you antibiotics or are they going to test again?

They asked me too provide a water sample as I have a history of UTIs and incontinence so I can sometimes miss the signs. I dropped the sample off off later that afternoon but when I asked what would happen next and they said if it came back that I didn't have a water infection they wouldn't do anything.
Surely if it's not a UTI there must be something else causing it so there would be grounds for further investigation rather than just leaving it?

I've just consulted Dr Google and read an article that stays that white cell count can increase as pregnancy progresses. As I don't know exactly how far on I am could it be a possibility that the level they have detected is normal for this stage, but they have set the parameters too low because I'm further on than they thought? clutching at straws here!

A high white cell count can be normal in pregnancy. If it's higher than that, it can indicate jnfection, however, if you are well in yourself, most likely the GP will do nothing, they wouldnt give antibiotics 'blind' if you dont need them. Just keep an eye out for any symptoms of UTI/chest infection etc.

Thank you! I've been driving myself mad with worry the last couple of days thinking it could be something that would harm my baby.
Got my first scan tomorrow so fx my mind will be put at rest then!

Lots of luck for the scan!

It's probably just an infection. You have lots of different types of white cells and elevations in each of them can mean different things, from allergies to infections etc.

Don't forget that your body is pretty damn good at fighting stuff off, so a little virus or bug that just gave you a bit if the sniffles can elevate your white cell count, just like a nasty gastro bug can mess up your liver panel enzymes for a few weeks.

They will likely just check again on your next routine bloods but if nothing else is said it's considered ncs ( not clinically significant) and you're fine. :)

A few years back I had some routine bloods done the day after I'd run a half marathon. The doc called me as my CK levels were so high they thought I'd had a heart attack. When I told him I'd run 13 miles the day before and that it was just normal muscle breakdown, we had a laugh about it - lab values can really vary week to week with activity and illness! :)
