Hi Guys,

I hope someone can help me. Smile
I looking to travel in June at 23 weeks to Spain for a 10 day Holiday.
I was wondering what insurance I need to take out, or what specific companies cover pregnant women and all eventualities..
Looking at insurance is a mine field.

I hope someone can help and guide me in the right direction? Star

i just got insurance from colombus as i normally do. i mentioned in preexisting conditions that i was pregnant. it then asks about specific pregnancy conditions. it didnt increase the cost of the policy for me as i hadno specific problems.

remember to check the airlines policy on pregnant flyers as they vary regarding weeks pregnant and being to fly

Give your current insurer a call. Mine, which is LV, cover pregnancy as standard up until a certain point. Of course if you have any complications it might get more complicated - I was diagnosed with placenta praevia at my 20 week scan but was still covered, you'd have to check if something like that shows up. Don't forget to pack your yellow book in your hand luggage and make sure your EU health card is up to date. Have a great holiday

The main question to ask is whether the insurance covers both you and the baby if something were to happen. There have been cases in the media recently where the mothers care had been covered but not the babies (and if you happened to go into labour early at 26 weeks the baby would need additional care).

Good luck and enjoy your holiday. Smile

You could call a broker for an explanation of the options - even if you then go off and do your own googling after that?!

weeblue has it on the head - at that point, check that care for your baby is covered.

I'm travelling a lot whilst pregnant and so looked into this in detail. They cannot legally increase your premium or refuse cover for a 'routine' pregnancy - this counts as gender discrimination. However, any complications should be noted and they may not cover these. Equally, they are only likely to cover you for unforeseen complications whilst you're away, rather than routine pregnancy issues. i.e. if you decided not to go as you were feeling unwell and this was just due to general pregnancy rather than a specific pregnancy complication, they are unlikely to pay out.

Hope that helps!

IME most policies will cover you till 28 weeks or so, some later. Virgin money insurance covered me until
34 weeks or so, I called to check as it's otherwise not clear. Unless you or baby have specified conditions most "normal" policies will be sufficient just double check before you buy. And make sure you have up to date EHIC if travelling in Europe.
